Prepotto among vineyards, churches and the Judrio Valley

Prepotto combines the landscape of the Judrio Valley with viticulture, historic churches and fortified architecture. Borgo Centa and Castello di Albana

A distinctive part of the village is Borgo Centa, a settlement within the municipality of Prepotto. Some of the houses are medieval in origin and developed around the Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo. Downhill, the natural terrain protects the settlement, while uphill it is protected by a large stone wall. The church itself dates from the 13th century, forming part of the long history of this small village setting.

The Castello di Albana also tells of a turbulent past. It was built to defend the Judrio Valley and was first mentioned in 1161 as “in villa qui dicitur Albana”. After being destroyed and rebuilt several times, including damage suffered during the Second World War, the complex acquired its present form as a fortified house. It consists of a rectangular central keep, four corner towers and an enclosing wall.

Church routes through Prepotto

The Church of Santa Giustina lies along Prepotto’s village and vineyard circular route, and its origins date back to the 8th century. The 16th-century Chapel of San Giacomo is also located along this circular route. Together with Santi Pietro e Paolo in Borgo Centa, these buildings show how closely the paths through the landscape are connected with the historic settlements and religious sites.

A more extensive route is the Via delle antiche Pievi di Prepotto. In the municipality of Prepotto, it connects four ancient votive churches with the Santuario di Castelmonte: San Pietro Apostolo in San Pietro di Chiazzacco, Santi Pietro e Paolo in Centa, San Nicola Vescovo in Cladrecis and the Church of the Three Magi in Prepotischis. The route begins at the scuola dell'infanzia at Via Brolo 39 in Prepotto and ends at the Santuario di Castelmonte.

Judrio Valley and Anello dello Schioppettino

The Judrio Valley, which runs through Prepotto, offers an ever-changing natural landscape with its diverse flora and fauna. The Anello dello Schioppettino leads through the small valley between Prepotto and Dolegna del Collio. The landscape is shaped by viticulture and includes wineries, farms, small churches and villages. The circular route therefore combines nature observation with the rural and cultural characteristics of the area.

The Anello dello Schioppettino runs along roads with little traffic and can be walked or cycled all year round. During the grape harvest, be aware of agricultural vehicles. Wine from Prepotto

Schioppettino di Prepotto e Cialla is an indigenous red grape variety held in high regard in Friuli Venezia Giulia. In the DOC Friuli Colli Orientali, it is considered the characteristic variety of the subzone of the same name. According to tradition, its birthplace lies among the historic buildings, farmsteads and vineyards of Prepotto.
