Historical traces in Campoformido

Campoformido combines places of remembrance with landscapes of the Friulian plain. The agriculturally shaped settlement developed along Via Principe di Piemonte. Architectural and structural elements characteristic of rural building types in the Friulian plain can be found along it. A copy of the statue of peace, originally intended for Campoformido, stands in the central square.

The medieval fortification of Centa di Campoformido is also one of the visible historical traces. It is still recognisable on its northern and southern sides, where parts of the masonry have been preserved. Those who value history and local architecture when choosing a hotel in Campoformido will find several concrete points of reference for exploring the area.

Casa del Trattato and sacred art

One place of remembrance is the Casa del Trattato, formerly Casa Del Torre. The Peace of Campoformio between Napoleon and the Austrians was signed in this building on 17 October 1797. The Casa del Trattato is probably a building from the late 16th century that has survived to the present day through several renovations. Above the commemorative plaque is a recently restored devotional fresco of the Madonna and Child.

The Chiesetta di Santa Caterina d’Alessandria is also part of Campoformido’s cultural heritage. It was decorated with remarkable frescoes in the 13th century, some of which can still be seen today. Archaeological excavations there uncovered the burials of two members of the local medieval nobility. The annual event “Un giorno con Napoleone” brings the atmosphere of the era of the Treaty of Campoformio back to life.

Magredi and Parco del CormĂ´r

The historical sites are complemented by natural areas and green paths. The Magredi di San Canciano biotope in Campoformido covers 43.34 hectares. The Magredi di Campoformido area, designated as a Zona Speciale di Conservazione, covers 242 hectares. Both figures illustrate the different scales of the two natural areas without equating their respective protection designations.

Another point of interest is the Mulino di Basaldella (Mulino del Ronco). The mill operated from 1300 to 1982 and serves as the visitor centre of Parco del CormĂ´r di Campoformido. Visits and educational workshops for schools and families are organised there for groups. These can be combined with activities in the Magredi meadows or excursions in Parco del CormĂ´r.

Easy route and green paths

For an active exploration of the area, the Cjaminade de Boschete Furlane offers an easy route with a stated distance of 5.6 km. The route has several access points along its course. In addition, the Boschete Furlane green space has footpaths and children’s play areas. When planning your visit, you can therefore distinguish between a route, short walks through a green space and cultural and historical stops without conflating the individual offerings.

The combination of the Casa del Trattato, sacred art, medieval structural remains, the Magredi and green paths shapes the choice of possible focuses in Campoformido. Accommodation can be considered according to your own interests in culture, nature or an easy route.
