The Pieve di Santo Stefano in Cesclans is one of the 11 ancient parish churches of Carnia. It stands on a rocky crag at an altitude of 384 m and overlooks the Lago di Cavazzo below. The church crypt houses the Antiquarium of the Pieve di Santo Stefano. Several other churches add to the cultural character of Cavazzo Carnico. The Chiesa di San Daniele is an 18th-century church and houses an altarpiece by Tintoretto depicting the Nativity of Mary. The Chiesa di San Rocco is a 16th-century votive church with furnishings from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Chiesa di San Candido in Somplago has Romanesque origins and is located in a square below the rock face of Cesclans, which drops steeply down towards the lake.
Visitor Centre and paths through the landscape
The Visitor Centre of the Ecomuseo Val del Lago is a point of reference for the ecomuseum’s educational and outreach activities. It was built in 2002 and features permanent exhibitions about bird nests, the “sassi” of the Tagliamento and traditional fishing in the lake. Nature observation, the river landscape and the history of fishing are thus brought together as central elements of the visit.
For walks and nature observation, the mouth and reed beds of the Rio Schiasazze, as well as the fish hatchery in Somplago (Cavazzo Carnico), are among the Ecomuseo Val del Lago’s currently accessible visitor routes. Another route leads through the Palude Vuarbis: a wooden footbridge reaches a signposted observation point with views across the entire marshland. Both paths focus on different aspects of waterside, reed-bed and marshland landscapes.
Along the lakeside paths of Lago di Cavazzo, there are several birdwatching observation points. Water rails, coots and kingfishers can be seen there. The road around Lago dei 3 Comuni can be walked or travelled by bicycle and car. This makes it possible to explore the lakeshore and landscape using different modes of transport.
Hiking and water sports
A hike to Monte San Simeone leads through an untouched environment with a large number of butterflies. At Lago di Cavazzo, the Nautilago sailing school, authorised by the Federazione Italiana Vela, organises sailing and canoeing courses in summer.
