Cornino between Lake and Nature Reserve
A distinctive natural feature of Cornino is “Cornino Lake”. The lake is approximately 140 metres long and 8 metres deep. Its underground water circulation ensures rapid water exchange and clear water. These characteristics make it an illustrative part of a trip focused on the landscape and natural features.

Nature Reserve and Visitor Centre
The broader landscape framework is formed by the “Riserva Naturale Regionale del Lago di Cornino” regional nature reserve. It covers approximately 500 hectares and lies between the municipalities of Forgaria nel Friuli and Trasaghis. The size of the area creates a wide natural space in which you can combine the various facets around the lake, nature reserve and trails.
The visitor centre of the Riserva Naturale Regionale del Lago di Cornino houses a small museum about the “Progetto Grifone” and the special natural features of the reserve. It also has aviaries with rescued animals, predominantly birds of prey, that cannot be released back into the wild, as well as a feeding station for free-ranging animals. The museum, aviaries and feeding station each offer a different focus between natural history and wildlife.
Hikes of Different Lengths
The “Lake Trail” is a 1.48-kilometre circular route that takes approximately 40 minutes to walk from the reserve’s visitor centre. This provides a short loop alongside a longer hike: the “Sompcornino–Ledrania–Peonis Trail” is approximately 5 kilometres long, takes two and a half hours, and follows CAI trails 817 and 818. The different distances make it easier for you to assess the trails according to the time available and your preferred hiking pace.
For a considerably longer tour, there is the “Ring of Monte Prat from Cornino”. This moderately difficult circular hike covers 15.4 kilometres and takes approximately 6 hours and 5 minutes. Together, the three trails show a clear range: from a short loop around the nature reserve to a long, moderately difficult hike.
Independently or with a Guide
The way you visit is also important for your planning. The trails in the nature reserve are intended for independent visits. Guided visits to the Riserva Naturale Regionale del Lago di Cornino, on the other hand, are only possible with advance reservation.

Rural culture also has its own place in Cornino. The “Geis and Riscjei House of Rural Manual Work” is housed in the restored former community dairy in Cornino. It includes areas dedicated to dairy farming, wool spinning and kitchen utensils. These themes illustrate how varied a stay between the natural environment and regional everyday culture can be.
