Forni Di Sopra showcases the Dolomiti Friulane in many different ways: you can experience a landscape of forests, rocky peaks and alpine meadows, discover unique wildlife and, at the same time, encounter a distinctive Carnic culture. Between via ferratas, nature trails, museums and churches, the town can be explored from a variety of perspectives.
Nature and Wildlife
The Forni di Sopra valley lies within the Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti Friulane. It extends from the valley floor through forests and pastures at medium elevations up to rocky peaks. The Sentiero Truoi dai Sclops passes vertical rock faces, alpine meadows and forest vegetation. Rare or endemic flowers grow at higher elevations; the trail also passes through habitats of ibex and chamois.
In the five-hectare Area Faunistica Parulana in the Parco delle Dolomiti Friulane, you can observe lynx, foxes, deer and owls. Two visits are offered for exploring the area: a leisurely tour lasting approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, and a 2-hour-and-30-minute visit focusing on the biodiversity of the area.
Active Experiences in the Mountains
Dolomiti Adventure Park features 11 suspended courses with Tibetan bridges, walkways and zip lines. The park also includes the Powerfan, a 15-metre-high free-fall jump. The Ferrata Adventure Climb Varmost is a via ferrata on Clap Varmost. Starting from the chairlift's upper station in the Som Picol district, it takes three to four hours and includes an initial canyon section as well as a suspended Tibetan bridge.
For a longer mountain excursion, the route to Bivacco Marchi-Granzotto starts and ends at the Ponte Giaf car park; it takes six to eight hours. The first section of the Varmost chairlift reaches Som Picol at an altitude of 1,450 metres. From there, you can reach the nearby Som Picol mountain hut, which serves typical cuisine from Forni di Sopra.
Local History and Regional Culture
The Ecomuseo Fornese is an open-air museum created through the collaboration of the residents of Forni di Sopra, presenting the town's tangible and intangible heritage. One of its routes is a water-themed walk from the Vico district along the Tagliamento into the natural environment of the Dolomiti Friulane, passing streams, cascades and artesian springs. The Sentiero dei Bambini is a 400-metre-long nature trail with 20 stations where visitors can interact directly with nature.
The ruins of Castello di Sacuidic lie within the municipality of Forni di Sopra, near an ancient road and a ford across the Tagliamento River. The site is dated to around the end of the 12th century. Information panels explain the excavations, the various settlement phases, life at the time and the work carried out to restore the site.
In the Cella district, the Chiesa di San Floriano stands as a national monument on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Tagliamento. The church contains frescoes by Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo and an altarpiece by Bellunello. This Bellunello altarpiece is an eight-panel polyptych bearing a signature and dated 1480. A votive oratory built in 1515 and connected to the Santuario Madonna della Salute became a destination for numerous pilgrims.
The Ciasa dai Fornés houses the Museo Il Filo dei Ricordi, with agricultural tools and products made through the natural processing of wool, hemp and linen using plant dyes. The regional craft tradition also includes scarpéts: traditional Carnic shoes made of embroidered velvet and crafted entirely by hand.
