Grimacco: Trails, Panoramic Views and Culture in the Julian Pre-Alps

Grimacco in the Upper Cosizza Valley

Grimacco lies in the upper Cosizza Valley, in the heart of the Julian Pre-Alps. Here, mountain trails, viewpoints and cultural sites offer a variety of options for planning your trip. Grimacco Inferiore lies on the southeastern slope of the ridge separating the Cosizza and Rieca valleys. A path branching off the road near Dolina connects Grimacco Inferiore with Grimacco Superiore.

Trails to Monte San Martino

Shortly after Seuza, a forestry track branches off towards Topolò. It follows the right bank of the Val Codariana watercourse for some distance and turns into a trail after crossing the Zavelincelman stream. This route complements the trails connecting Grimacco with the surrounding landscapes.

Before Canalaz, a forestry track branches off from the road and climbs the western slope to a large mown meadow. From there, a trail leads to the church and summit of Monte San Martino.

The Clastra–San Martino nature trail (CAI 761) reaches the old 13th-century church of San Martino and the panoramic summit of Monte San Martino at an elevation of 987 metres. At several points, it crosses the Cammino delle 44 chiesette votive of the Natisone Valleys. The summit area is a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Colovrat ridge and the villages of Drenchia and Clabuzzaro.

Culture in the Valley and Villages

Grimacco also offers points of interest for anyone who wants to combine landscapes with regional history. The Museo Ruttar preserves objects illustrating the customs of the rural society of the Natisone Valleys at the beginning of the 20th century. Traditional rural architectural forms, with houses made of stone and wood, have been preserved in Brida.

Every year on Ash Wednesday, Clodig di Grimacco celebrates the burial of Carnival. Every July, Topolò hosts an international avant-garde festival. Over the course of the year, the area around Grimacco therefore features both a traditional custom and a contemporary cultural highlight.

The Žefcjova family collection preserves documents and objects from life in the Natisone Valleys from 1600 to the present day. The Castagno di Canalaz is a monumental tree more than 400 years old. Near the mouth of the stream into the Codarina stream, the ruins of an old mill can be seen.

A Route for Cycling Too

The climb from Grimacco Inferiore towards Passo San Martino first passes through Grimacco Superiore. Up to that point, it is gentle and fully paved. This specific route description helps you coordinate a cycling outing with the hiking trails and cultural destinations in the valley.
