Lauco between landscapes and regional culture

Lauco combines a varied landscape with striking examples of Friulian-Carnic architecture and traditional festivals. Part of the municipality lies within the Parco Intercomunale delle Colline Carniche. There, gentle hills, meadows and wooded areas alternate. This creates a destination where nature observation, physical activity and cultural discoveries come together within a manageable setting.

Gorges of the Forra del Vinadia

The Forra del Vinadia consists of three large gorges. The Rio Chiantone, Rio Pichions and Rio Vinadia flow through them. The outer section begins directly below the village of Vinaio, located at an altitude of 807 m, in the municipality of Lauco. When water levels are low, this section can be walked without major difficulty. The specific water-level requirement is important for understanding the route: its accessibility cannot be considered independently of local conditions.

Cross-country skiing on the plateau

Lauco also offers a clear point of reference for cross-country skiing. The plateau, located at an altitude of 700 m, has three ski trails. This means that winter sports add another way to experience the area actively, complementing the landscapes of the Forra del Vinadia and the Parco Intercomunale delle Colline Carniche. Architecture in Lauco and Trava

Several buildings and village landscapes give local history a tangible face. Palazzo Beorchia in Trava is an example of 18th-century Friulian-Carnic architecture and features arcades. The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Tutti i Santi in Lauco was built from the 18th century onward. Borgo Cavocjarie is considered the most typical hamlet of Lauco. On Via Centrale, the Casa di Elena Cimenti recalls the area’s historic local architecture. Trava is also home to the Chiesa del Santo Nome di Maria, a 16th-century building.

Traditions tied to specific places

Lauco’s traditional festivals include the “Rievocazione storica del venerdì santo – Via Crucis Vivente”. The traditional festival “Lancio das Cidulas” is associated with 30 October in the hamlet of Buttea and 31 October in Pesmolêt. These specific place and date references make it clear that Lauco’s cultural identity is not limited to individual buildings, but also encompasses various places within the municipality.

Getting there and public transport

From Udine and the Friulian plain, the route to Lauco follows the A23 motorway towards Tarvisio. Take the Carnia–Tolmezzo exit, then continue on the SS52 towards Tolmezzo and Villa Santina. Regional public transport in Lauco is operated by TPL FVG.
