Lignano Sabbiadoro: Coast, Lagoon and Architecture

Lignano Sabbiadoro lies between the Laguna di Marano, the Tagliamento River and the Adriatic Sea. This location connects the lagoon area, the course of the river and the Adriatic coast.

Lagoon, Waterfront Paths and Waterbirds

A cycle and pedestrian path runs along the entire shore of the Laguna di Marano on Via Lungolaguna Trento. The lagoon is classified as a wetland of international importance. Along the path, waterbirds such as herons and swans can be observed on the surface of the water. On this stretch, the route and opportunities for observing the water are directly adjacent to each other.

Faro Rosso: Views and Current Restriction

Faro Rosso is a red lighthouse that extends farther out to sea along a long wooden pier. As a viewpoint, it makes the transition between the waters of the Laguna di Marano and the Adriatic visible. The pedestrian bridge of Faro Rosso is currently inaccessible because it was partially destroyed by a storm surge; renovation is planned. At Faro Rosso, the bridge’s restricted accessibility is therefore a separate planning factor.

Architecture Overlooking the Beach

The Grand Hôtel Lignano was inaugurated on 11 June 1905. The Terrazza a Mare, inaugurated in 1972, has a long, partially covered pedestrian pier over the beach and ends in a striking white, shell-shaped structure with a viewpoint offering 360-degree views.

Historical Traces along the Lungomare and in Lignano

Along the Lungomare Kechler, works by the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli di Spilimbergo can be seen on the walls of various beach offices. Villa Zuzzi provides a different historical accent: The building was constructed in the Art Nouveau style and was the institutional seat of Lignano’s first town hall until the beginning of the 1970s. Until the 19th century, the San Zaccaria chapel was the only religious point of reference for the farmers and fishermen on the coast and in the lagoon.

By Bicycle between the Coast and Nature Trails

The sustainable mobility service Passo Barca crosses both banks of the Tagliamento River and connects the cycle paths within the municipality of Lignano to the supraregional cycle network; this provides access to the nature trails found there. For a cycling tour, both crossing the Tagliamento and connecting to the supraregional network are therefore part of the same route.

Acquasplash in Lignano

The Acquasplash water park in Lignano was founded in the 1980s and is considered Italy’s first water park. Acquasplash was therefore founded after the inauguration of the Grand Hôtel Lignano in 1905 and the Terrazza a Mare in 1972.
