Majano between Church Art and Landscape
Majano combines Roman traces, Lombard archaeology, religious buildings, a distinctive wetland landscape and a recurring cultural event. Majano is home to Roman finds, the San Salvatore necropolis, several churches, the Torbiera di Casasola and the Festival di Majano. Majano features archaeological finds, religious buildings and the Snaidero building designed by architect Angelo Mangiarotti.
Roman and Lombard Traces
Majano’s Roman past includes numerous archaeological finds from this period. Another focal point is the Lombard necropolis of San Salvatore in Majano. It comprises 83 graves containing grave goods of some historical and artistic value. Church art and archaeology come together here in different forms: Romanesque architecture, wooden altars, 14th-century frescoes and graves with grave goods. For visitors interested in cultural history, this creates a chronological arc reaching back to the Lombard period.
The Hospitale and the San Giovanni Complex
In San Tomaso di Majano, the Hospitale di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme was founded at the end of the 12th century by the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem. The Hospitale was also an important station on the Via del Tagliamento along the ancient Via d’Allemagna. The San Giovanni complex has been almost completely restored and includes the Casa del priore and the Chiesa di San Giovanni.
Churches, Frescoes and Architecture
The Chiesa di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme has a Romanesque layout with a rectangular floor plan and a semicircular apse facing east. Inside are three wooden altars, including an altar dating from 1500 with six statues. In San Tomaso di Majano, the Chiesetta di San Giorgio contains 14th-century frescoes that were uncovered again after the earthquake.
More recent architecture is also one of Majano’s many facets: the building housing Snaidero’s offices and headquarters in Majano (Udine) was designed by architect Angelo Mangiarotti. The Castello di Susans adds another historical accent. It is a historic castle from the 17th century that was founded in the 16th century.
Wetland Landscape and a Route through the Surroundings
The Torbiera di Casasola in Majano is one of the most extensive low-alkaline wetlands in the region. The “10 mila passi di salute FVG - MAJANO” route offers a different landscape experience: it runs mainly over a moraine hill and starts at the car park by the sports field in Susans.
