Paluzza between Trenches, Churches and Laghetti

Paluzza appeals to travelers who want to get to know a place through more than just one defining feature. Between the Laghetti di Timau, trails leading to historic fortifications, museums and churches, the landscape, outdoor activity and culture offer different ways to explore the area. Getting your bearings between Paluzza and Timau

You can reach the Centro Laghetti from Tolmezzo via State Road 52 toward the Austrian border. It is located 2 kilometers north of the Timau district in the municipality of Paluzza. The walking trail from Museis to Torre Moscarda begins at the Bosco di Museis farm in the district of the same name in Paluzza. Those who want to combine trails and excursion destinations can consider these different locations separately when planning their day.

Historic trails on Pal Piccolo and Freikofel

The trail to Pal Piccolo includes Italian and Austrian trenches that can be explored on foot and have been restored by volunteers. In summer, guided tours of the fortifications, trenches and communication trenches on Pal Piccolo are offered. Numerous military remnants are also visible at the Freikofel open-air museum of the First World War. The starting point of the Freikofel route is beyond Timau, at the Kantonniera by the fourth hairpin bend; this is where CAI Trail 401a begins. This makes it possible to explore the history of the landscape through various trails and points of interest.

Museums, churches and places of remembrance

The museum “The Carnia Area in the Great War 1915–1918” comprises ten exhibition rooms as well as additional rooms for museum activities. Its exhibition space covers 700 square meters and extends over two floors. One themed room explores the history of the Carnic-Portatrici and the heroine Maria Plozner Mentil. The ossuary in Timau contains the remains of 1,763 fallen soldiers, including 298 unidentified Italians and 65 Austro-Hungarian soldiers.

The churches also offer insight into different aspects of the region’s culture. The Cristo Re Church in Timau houses a 15-meter-high wooden crucifix. The Cathedral of Santa Maria in Paluzza contains frescoes by Giuseppe Furnio on the ribbed vault and in the lunettes. In the Church of San Osvaldo in Cleulis, paintings depict the departure of emigrants and the Carnic-Portatrici. For those interested in culture, this creates a route ranging from sacred art and local remembrance to the history of the First World War.

Laghetti, geology and Torre Moscarda

At the Geopark visitor center of the Carnic Alps near the Laghetti, geological and paleontological features are presented through multimedia equipment, interactive stations, 3D models and educational laboratories. The Laghetti di Timau in the municipality of Paluzza originally formed when a landslide dammed the But torrent. Torre Moscarda in Paluzza is dated to the year 1200. Together, these places provide insight into landscape formation and older traces, and can be easily combined with the walking trail from Museis to Torre Moscarda.
