Povoletto lies on gentle hills overlooking the Torre River. Here, this gives the town a combination of river landscapes, paths, wine designations and historic sites. Two parks, one route and several places of cultural and historical interest offer different ways to experience this landscape.
Parco del Torre di Salt lies on the Torrente Torre near the old bridge symbolic of the Salt district and is connected to the cycle path to Udine. The park has a covered structure and an equipped kitchen area for celebrations and events. Out and About Along the Torre
North of the municipality, Parco del Torre di Savorgnano lies on the Torre river embankment near the bridge to Zompitta. The park offers views of wooded hills covered with vineyards. In this way, the Torre is not merely a watercourse, but also shapes the view of the adjacent hilly landscape.
A Route Through River Landscapes and Riparian Woodland
The “10 thousand health steps FVG – POVOLETTO” route runs entirely within the municipality of Povoletto, follows the riverbank and paths with natural, unpaved surfaces, and is approximately 4.7 km long. For more than 1 km, it follows the bank of the Torre River and passes through stable meadows and riparian woodland. Its landscape character thus emerges from the combination of the watercourse, open grassland and wooded riverbanks.
Castles, Villas and Fossils
The ruins of Castello della Motta stand on a wooded ridge above the confluence of the Torrente Torre and the Rio Motta. The site is currently accessible on foot, with some difficulty, via narrow paths. Archaeological finds at Castello della Motta include a fortified residential tower dating from the late 7th or early 8th century. At the Antiquarium della Motta di Povoletto, the Mostra del Fossile includes fossils from the Friulian Palaeozoic and Mesozoic, including trilobites, ammonites and rudists.
Belvedere and Savorgnan also lead into the history of the area. The Domus Magna in Belvedere was built to a design dating from 1476 and dominated an old, heavily used crossing of the Torre by ford. Villa Savorgnan is a fortified villa that served as the administrative seat of a powerful fief whose jurisdiction extended over the waters of the Roggia Cividina.
Wine and the Local Calendar
The municipality of Povoletto falls within three important wine designations. The flat area, characterised by loose gravelly and stony soils, belongs to the DOC Friuli Grave; the hilly and foothill areas fall under the DOC Friuli Colli Orientali and the DOCG Friuli Colli Orientali Picolit. In Povoletto, the Sagra “Quarte d'Avost” is associated with the fourth week of August.
