Meadows, Pastures and Expansive Views

The Sentiero 749 leads across meadows and pastures to a viewpoint and onward to an old mountain pasture. From there, the view extends to the summit of Monte Matajur, the valleys below and across the Friulian plain. The sequence of open spaces, mountain pasture and panorama makes the route a tangible landscape experience in which not only the viewpoint but also the agriculturally shaped sections of the trail play a role.

From Ponteacco, a short forest path leads to a restored old mill with a visitor centre and onward to the Natisone River. Here, the route connects with a historic mill building and the river landscape, without reducing the two impressions to the same landscape view.

Cultural History Between Museum and Archaeological Site

The Museo di paesaggi e narrazioni in San Pietro al Natisone is a thematic and territorial museum based on narratives rather than a collection of objects. The installation Paesaggi culturali provides another cultural highlight: the three-part video work runs on three screens and explores the seven cultural landscapes of the area from Tarvisio to Trieste.

The prehistoric archaeological site of Biarzo lies on the Natisone River near the hamlet of Biarzo and contains settlement phases from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods. Stone tools, perforated shells and a worked harpoon made from deer antler were found there. Near Ponte San Quirino, on a terrace at the confluence of the Alberone and Natisone rivers, there is also a fortified protohistoric settlement dating from the Middle to the Late Bronze Age.

Traces on Monte Barda and the Natisone

In Late Antiquity, Monte Barda was home to a partially visible observation post. It formed part of the Vallum Alpium Iuliarum fortification system. The Roman bridge of Vernasso is a stone bridge with a single arch and is located near the small church of San Quirino. It may have been used to cross the Natisone. Both sites provide historical reference points in the landscape while retaining their distinct forms and chronological classifications.

Gubane, Strucchi and Traditional Recipes

At Dorbolò Gubane, the third generation continues the family tradition with the recipes of grandmother Antonietta. Visitors are received there only by prior appointment, with 15 days' advance notice. At La Gubana della Nonna, Gubane and Strucchi recipes were documented through careful research and conversations with women who prepared these typical cakes at home. The recipes, previously passed down only orally, were to be recorded in writing.
