Sauris: Culture, Trails and Crafts in Sauris di Sotto
Sauris di Sotto: Village Scenery and Arrival
Sauris di Sotto (Dörf) is characterized by distinctive stone and wooden houses with balconies on three sides and is located at an altitude of 1,212 m. A private means of transport is recommended for traveling to Sauris di Sotto. There are several free parking spaces in the center of Sauris di Sotto. The recommendation to use a private means of transport and the central parking spaces belong to two steps of the same journey: driving to Sauris di Sotto and arriving in the village center. Both should be taken into account before visiting the village.
Sacred Sites and Venetian History
The Santuario di Sant’Osvaldo is located in Sauris di Sotto. The Chiesa di Sant'Osvaldo re e martire is also located there. Both sacred sites are therefore in the same village, but differ in their respective names. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Santuario was one of the best-known and most prestigious religious centers of the Republic of Venice.
Archive and Community History
The Centro Storiografico di Sauris – Museo di Sant’Osvaldo is located in the parish office of Sauris di Sotto. It documents the history of the community of Sauris, particularly the cult of Saint Oswald. The museum also preserves parchments from the parish archive dating from the 15th and 16th centuries.
Textile Handicrafts at the BEIBARHAUS
The BEIBARHAUS craft workshop in Sauris di Sotto is located in an old stone and wooden sawmill. Carpets and tapestries are made on a hand loom. Table decorations, scarves, capes, and blankets are also produced. The work on the hand loom and the old mill are located in the same workshop.
Route Through Stavoli and Forests
The L'antro della Bélin – Località Straitar – 2H route leads from the Kursaal in Sauris di Sotto eastward uphill through Stavoli and forests to Straitar. It passes by a characteristic rock fissure called Bélinlouch. The starting point at the Kursaal, the direction east, and the destination Straitar provide fixed points of orientation along the route. When planning the time, the ascent on the section through Stavoli and forests should be explicitly taken into account; Straitar remains the endpoint of the described route. The Eimblateribn 2A route is also suitable for families with children.
Mountain Cheese and Prosciutto
At the cellar of Malga Alta Carnia, visitors can learn about the maturation and refinement of mountain cheese; the experience ends with a tasting. A guided tour of Prosciuttificio Wolf is followed by a tasting. The focus differs: at Malga Alta Carnia, the focus is on the maturation and refinement of mountain cheese, while at Prosciuttificio Wolf, it is on the guided tour of the facility. At both stops, the respective visit is followed by a tasting.
