Border history and cultural diversity
The Museo della Dogana di Coccau in Tarvisio focuses on the history of borders and customs posts, particularly the history of the Italian-Austrian border.
The Santuario del Monte Santo di Lussari is also known as Svete Višarje and Luschariberg and is known as the “Sanctuary of the Three Peoples”; people speaking Italian and Friulian, Slovenian and German have been coming together here since time immemorial.
The Sanctuary of Madonna del Lussari has also been a pilgrimage destination for people of Slavic, Italian and German origin for centuries.
Routes to Monte Lussari
The Sentiero del pellegrino begins in Camporosso and leads through the ancient Forest of Tarvisio up Monte Lussari to the Sanctuary of Madonna del Lussari. The route includes 970 metres of elevation gain; the estimated walking time is three hours. In addition, stage AAT R4 leads from Tarvisio to Monte Lussari.
Lakes, forest and mining
The circuit around the Fusine Lakes runs along the shore through beech and Norway spruce forest and offers views of Mangart and Ponze. This route therefore combines a lakeside landscape with forest sections and striking mountain views. Lake Predil can be reached from Tarvisio on TPL route 204 in the direction of the Predil Caves.
At the Raibl Geomineral Park, visitors can walk through parts of the former mine tunnels and learn about minerals, mining techniques and the hard work of thousands of miners who worked there for centuries. The park thus focuses on the former mining history and the working world connected with this area.
Cycling south
For cycling travellers, the FVG1 Ciclovia Alpe Adria runs south from Tarvisio via Pontebba, Venzone, Gemona del Friuli, Udine, Palmanova, Aquileia and Grado. The route is predominantly downhill or flat, presents only a few technical cycling difficulties and runs mostly along cycle paths or low-traffic paved side roads. Several sections are on well-rideable gravel paths. With its long succession of different towns and villages, the route can be regarded as a distinct focus alongside the mountain and pilgrimage routes.

Tarvisio’s location between several cultural regions is also reflected in its cuisine: the town’s food includes Friulian, Carinthian and Slovenian specialities.
