Castello di Udine stands on a hill overlooking the city’s historic centre. In Udine, history can be encountered in political, religious and artistic settings. Political and Religious History

Piazzale del Castello is home to Casa della Contadinanza. It is a reconstruction of a 16th-century civic building that served as the seat of the Contadinanza, one of the most important political bodies of the Patria del Friuli. The site thus takes you to a specific chapter of political history.

Since 1995, the Museo Diocesano e Gallerie del Tiepolo has been housed in the Palazzo Patriarcale di Udine. Since the 16th century, the palace had been the residence of the Patriarch of Aquileia; today, this function continues as the residence of the archbishop. The museum’s collection comprises around 700 works, some of which are on public display in the rooms on the first and second floors.

The exhibition tour begins in the atrium of the Palazzo Patriarcale, by the grand staircase. This is where Tiepolo’s first decorations are located; they continue in the Sala Rossa and the Galleria degli Ospiti on the piano nobile, the main floor of the palace. Museums with Different Areas of Focus

The Civici Musei di Udine organise guided tours and workshops. Registration is required to participate. This is important for planning your day if you would like to include the museum programme as a fixed part of your itinerary.

Casa Cavazzini is home to the Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Udine. At Casa Cavazzini, the Collezione FRIAM comprises 113 works by major figures in the history of American contemporary art. The city’s range therefore extends from historical architectural and religious heritage to modern and contemporary art.

The Museo Friulano di Storia Naturale offers educational and scientific outreach for the general public and schools.

Architecture and Cycling Route

Construction of the Duomo di Udine began in 1236 on the site of an existing church dedicated to Saint Jerome, under Patriarch Bertoldo di Andechs-Merania.

For active days, there is more to explore beyond the museums: the Udine–Grado cycling route (C103) leads from Udine to Grado and the Grado Lagoon. Udine is served by frequent regional trains that carry bicycles.
