Cannero Riviera among citrus terraces and historic paths

Cannero Riviera lies on a small alluvial plain formed over time by deposits from the Cannero River, which swells during high water. The mild summers and winters allow lime trees, lemons, olives, oranges, palms, azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias to thrive here. The Parco degli Agrumi features impressive terraced gardens and more than 17 plant species.

Citrus Gardens and Crafts

Guided tours of the Parco degli Agrumi are available in summer by reservation. The Mostra sugli Agrumi di Cannero takes place every year in March. The Museo Etnografico e della Spazzola documents traditional activities and trades such as woodworking and ironworking, agriculture, livestock farming and fishing. It also covers the industrial brush manufacturing that shaped Cannero’s economy in the first half of the 20th century.

Historic Paths through the Districts

Donego is home to stone houses with a medieval feel. Narrow lanes lead to interconnected courtyards, while the small Church of San Giovanni Battista dates from the 16th century. A comfortable mule track connects Cannero with Donego; on foot, the route takes about 20 minutes. A mostly scenic and undemanding path also leads through the three districts of Ronché, Donego and Cassino. Only a few short ascents and descents are more challenging.

Hiking with a Cultural Connection

From Cannero, you can walk to the gun emplacements on Monte Morissolo at an altitude of 1,311 metres. The Cadorna Line was built in 1916 as a defence system consisting of roads and fortifications. Cannero Riviera is also one of the municipalities involved in the Via GeoAlpina hiking project.

Shoreline, Boats and Island Castles

The Lido of Cannero Riviera is situated in a natural bay and offers a large, equipped sandy beach. The beach is also accessible to wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs. Nearby are the Castelli di Cannero, also known as Malpaga, on two small islands fortified in the Middle Ages. The Via delle Genti from Cannobio to Cannero Riviera leads to the small harbour, the lakeside promenade and the landing stage; from there, you can take a boat for the return journey. Navigazione Laghi operates the Cannero–Luino–Cannobio boat service under lines 71, 72, 73, 88, 89, 90 and 91.
