Canneto Among Churches, Olive Trees and Trail Culture
Canneto can be explored through several specific themes within a compact area: Piazza Luigi Pacieri is recommended as the central starting point for a visit of about one hour; the Church of San Rocco provides a clear historical reference with its construction in 1893. The Ulivone in Canneto is a thousand-year-old olive tree and is considered a symbol of Sabina and its olive groves. There are also sections of the Via di Francesco trail.

A Compact Tour Through Historic Canneto
On the medieval site of Santa Maria della Neve, also known as Santa Maria di Canneto, the monks of Farfa established one of their most important agricultural estates and equipped it with a chapel. Its agricultural origins provide the historical context for the later ecclesiastical buildings. San Rocco was built in 1893, placing its construction chronologically after the medieval origins of Santa Maria della Neve.
The larger and newer church in the complex dates from the 16th century and is dedicated to Madonna della Neve. The chapel of Santa Maria di Canneto, dating from the 14th to the 15th century, is the central work of art in the Santa Maria della Neve complex and is now used as a sacristy.
Trail Sections with Different Levels of Difficulty
Canneto also offers a clear comparison for walks and longer stages. The Via di Francesco trail reaches the first houses of Canneto; the section starting at the beginning of Via Catone is 1.8 km long and includes 60 m of ascent and 100 m of descent. The section from Canneto to Acquaviva di Nerola is 5.5 km long; it takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes, with 120 m of ascent and descent respectively. When planning stages, distance, walking time, ascent and descent can be considered separately, keeping the time and physical demands of each passage clear. For daily planning, this means different parameters: the short section starting at Via Catone must be planned differently from the longer passage from Canneto to Acquaviva di Nerola; separate time and elevation-gain/loss parameters should therefore be planned for each.
Olive-Growing Culture and Festivals in Canneto Sabino
Olive-growing culture is also reflected in local festivals. The Festa dell’olio nuovo took place on November 8 and 9, 2025, in Canneto Sabino. Its program included tastings of new olive oil from several oil mills in Sabina, as well as guided visits to oil mills in the surrounding area. The Sagra della Pizza Fritta Cannetana is considered a historic local tradition that takes place again in successive editions.
The Carnevale dei Bambini di Canneto Sabino is also a long-standing local tradition. Pro Canneto has organized it continuously since its foundation.
