Cottanello reveals its character particularly clearly in the historic center. The center is entirely pedestrianized and preserves the distinctive character of a Roman castrum with two concentric defensive walls and an intervening space for patrols. Anyone wishing to explore the town on foot will encounter a clearly defined historic center here.
Fortifications and the Eremo di San Cataldo
The Porta del Regno is part of Cottanello’s fortifications. The entrance was rebuilt in 1572 and connects the visible history of the town with a specific architectural detail. The hermitage known as the Eremo di San Cataldo is also located at the entrance to the town, carved into a large limestone rock.
The original chapel of the Eremo di San Cataldo contains a Byzantine fresco from the 12th century. It depicts Christ blessing from a jewel-encrusted throne with the twelve Apostles.
Ancient traces and marmo di cottanello
The Villa romana di Cottanello, an ancient site, lies in the surrounding area. Its rooms are decorated with geometric mosaics, predominantly in black and white. These are complemented by polychrome depictions of plants and animals, creating a contrast between different forms of ancient artistic design within the villa.
The stone known as marmo di cottanello is also part of the area’s history. It has been quarried in the Monti Sabini since the late Republican period and was known to the Romans. The name therefore points to a long connection between the stone and the region’s past.
Landscapes, trails, and ancient monumental trees
In 2021, the Prati di Cottanello were included in the National Catalogue of Historic Rural Landscapes of Italy because of their untouched nature, historical importance, and the traditional practices and knowledge associated with them. Cottanello is also part of the Cammino di Francesco. Both connections broaden the view beyond the built-up center without taking the historic center out of focus.
Among the area’s distinctive landscape features are the Cerri Monumentali. They reach a height of 31 meters and are approximately 400 years old.
