Fiumata on Lago del Salto
Fiumata combines a distinctive lakeside landscape with the history of a town that was almost completely flooded by the reservoir and subsequently rebuilt at a higher elevation on the lake’s southwestern shore. In the regional context of Fiumata, Lago del Salto covers approximately 820 hectares and has around 40 kilometres of shoreline. Dense vegetation surrounds Fiumata to the north, east and west; the lake lies to the south. As a result, the town brings together open water, vegetated shores and traces of the former settlement site in one immediate setting.

The old Fiumata included the higher-elevation area of „Capu Castellu“, which became part of the lower section of the rebuilt town. The churches also tell the story of this transformation: the parish church of San Michele Arcangelo in Fiumata was rebuilt in 1940, while the old church of San Angelo in fiume was flooded during construction of the reservoir. Those interested in local history therefore encounter not just a single building here, but several visible and documented connections to the transformation of the landscape.

For 2026, the Lazio Region designated the section from the Ponte di Fiumata downstream, including the gorge on the right bank of the town, for carp-fishing competitions. Also for 2026, the Lazio Region designated the lakeshore between the Ponte di Fiumata and the town of Borgo S. Pietro for spinning, float fishing and other types of fishing. The designated areas therefore differ according to location and fishing method.
At the Gola di Fiumata, the section from the bridge to the Salto tributary is designated for recreational night fishing. The specific designation of this section helps orient anyone wishing to combine their stay with a particular fishing interest.
Lakeside roads and connections across the basin
In the regional context of Fiumata, the shores of Lago del Salto are almost entirely accessible via a road suitable for cars, offering a wide choice of fishing spots. The Ponte Pacifico is also important for getting your bearings: it connects Fiumata with Pescorocchiano, Varco Sabino and Marcetelli on the opposite side of the basin. The bridge is 560 metres long.
From Rieti, the route to Fiumata follows the provincial road SP 578, the Cicolana, and the Rieti–Torano expressway; the Gamagna exit is then used. Fiumata’s local festival calendar includes the San Michele festival, held on 8 May. A festival dedicated to the Madonna is also held in Fiumata in May. Together with the lake, lakeside activities and the history of the rebuilt town, these festivals give a stay a cultural dimension that extends beyond the waterside landscape.
