Nespolo Between Forest and Mountain Landscapes
Nespolo is surrounded by forests that extend almost without interruption. The southeastern sector of the Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia Regional Nature Reserve consists of the elevations around Nespolo and forms the regional boundary with Abruzzo. The landscape is therefore shaped by forests and elevations. From the bench there, you can look out over the entire mountain range of the Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia Nature Reserve.
Behind the bench are a picnic area, a fountain and several starting points for trails through the park.
Hiking Between Nespolo and the Regional Boundaries
The CAI 349 Il Rio–Pelliccia–Il Rio circular trail offers a view of the eastern slope of Monte Cervia. The mountain is therefore a specific reference point along this trail and not merely part of the wider landscape.
The CAI 348 Colle Martino–Nespolo trail begins in the village of Colle Martino at an altitude of 810 m and runs for 5 km along a track. This marks the southeastern boundary of the Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia Regional Nature Reserve and also the regional boundary between Lazio and Abruzzo. Near Nespolo, a mountain view thus meets a section of trail that reflects both boundary connections.
Church and Water Mill
The Church of San Sebastiano was built in 1357 and restored in 1521. It houses a 16th-century painting from the Flemish school depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. The feast day of the patronal festival of San Sebastiano is January 20.
The Mulino ad acqua-Nespolo water mill is located a few hundred metres below the village of Nespolo beside a stream and can be reached via a short footpath through the vegetation. The building contains a wooden millstone with a horizontal wheel, formerly used to grind grains such as wheat, rye and spelt for family consumption.
A large stone basin is attached to the water mill building. It was formerly used to store water during dry periods or when the stream had a low water flow.
Picnics, Summer and Regional Cuisine
The Monte Piano area near Nespolo is equipped for picnics and summer camping.
Typical dishes of Nespolo’s culinary tradition include Gnocchetti con i fagioli. The local cuisine thus adds its own distinctive note alongside the area’s natural and cultural experiences.
How to Get to Nespolo
You can reach Nespolo via the A24 and the Casoli-Oricola exit; from there, it is approximately 15 km. The journey therefore leads to a place where landscapes and trails, the church and mill, and regional cuisine each offer their own starting points for planning your trip.
