Rocca Sinibalda combines impressive architecture with trails through the landscape of the Turano area. At its heart is the Castello di Rocca Sinibalda: during the Renaissance, Baldassarre Peruzzi gave the complex its present form as a powerful military fortress and bright aristocratic palace. Particularly striking is its layout, with a forward defensive spur, a defensive area known as the “tail” and a central palace structure on a rocky ridge.

Fortress, Art and Local History

A guided tour of the Castello di Rocca Sinibalda leads through the Corte Grande, numerous rooms of the Piano Nobile, the high defensive walkways, underground areas and the gardens. Rocca Sinibalda is also home to the permanent retrospective exhibition of the Museo Agapito Miniucchi. Agapito Miniucchi’s works use natural materials such as wood, stone and iron.

In the hamlet of Vallecupola, you will find the Biblioteca Casa Museo Angelo Di Mario. It contains the complete collection of catalogues on Etruscology and ancient languages, as well as Angelo Di Mario’s poetic and sculptural works. Another cultural point of reference is located in Posticciola: the Museo diffuso delle Tradizioni contadine e artigiane conveys the history of the people of the Turano Valley through farming and craft tools.

Nature Trails and Varied Routes

The area around Rocca Sinibalda is part of the Monte Navegna e Monte Cervia Regional Nature Reserve. A hike of around two hours from Rocca Sinibalda leads to the summit of Monte Pelato at an altitude of 1,050 metres. In the hamlet of Vallecupola, the Sentiero Italia passes through the Rocca Sinibalda area within the protected reserve.

The Cammino di San Benedetto also has a clearly defined route profile: the Rieti–Rocca Sinibalda stage runs along both unpaved and paved roads. In addition, Rocca Sinibalda has numerous nature trails that connect the hamlets along the Turano River. The “U Scertu” circular route was inaugurated on 18 November 2018, leading from the main square in Rocca Sinibalda to the old Mola on the Turano River and back along the opposite bank.

For a more active adventure, the Gola del Fosso Marangone lies between Longone Sabino and Rocca Sinibalda. This spring-fed gorge is suitable for canyoning. Thus, in and around Rocca Sinibalda, the focus is on landscapes of natural interest, trails with varied surfaces and a unique gorge experience.

Historic Places and Regional Traditions

The former monastery building in the historic centre of Rocca Sinibalda provides direct access to the historic viewpoint of Hortus de Sinibaldi. The parish church of Santi Agapito e Giustino preserves a valuable 17th-century painting. These two places complement the large complexes and museums with smaller, historically significant sites within the townscape.

Regional food culture is also linked to established events. The Sagra dei Vertuti takes place on 1 May in honour of a traditional spring dish. Rocca Sinibalda lies along the Strada del Tartufo e della Castagna della Valle del Turano. In October, the Sagra dei Frascarelli e Castagne is dedicated to the chestnut.
