Mountain landscapes around Scandriglia

Scandriglia combines a distinctive mountain landscape with religious buildings, festivals and trails that appeal to different interests. Within the protected municipal area, Monte Serrapopolo forms a long limestone ridge oriented from north to south, or along the Apennine axis. It connects with Monte Pellecchia and runs at an average elevation of 1,000 metres. This creates a destination where nature, outdoor activity and culture meet as closely interconnected themes.

Trails to the Pratarelle plateau

The Percorso delle Praterelle trail, CAI 310, leads from Scandriglia to the Pratarelle plateau. From Pratarelle, the village of Fonte degli Schiazzi can be reached in about 30 minutes. A monumental Turkey oak stands there. The approximate half-hour walk to Fonte degli Schiazzi can be considered a separate section with a possible break when planning your route.

Monasteries and churches with their own history

The Convento di San Nicola is located on Monte Pereatti above Scandriglia. Built in the 12th century, the religious complex includes a cloister, a refectory, a library and the friars’ cells. The Convento di San Nicola can only be reached on foot. Another religious site is the Convento di San Salvatore Minore, founded in the 11th century by San Domenico di Sora and comprising a Romanesque church.

Individual churches also have their own distinctive features. The Church of Santa Maria del Colle in Ponticelli Sabino has a Romanesque façade and votive frescoes dating from the 13th to the 16th century. The rural Church of Santa Barbara stands in Contrada Santa Barbara just outside the centre of Scandriglia and preserves a Madonna delle Grazie in the apse area. In Scandriglia, Santa Barbara is celebrated on 4 December.

Festivals, cuisine and regional atmosphere

The Sagra del Polentone alla Carbonara takes place in mid-December. This festival includes Christmas markets as well as polenta with bacon and sausage. At the end of August, Uomini & Cavalli – Western Spirit Pro Rodeo offers horse-riding demonstrations, riding activities for children and workshops. The programme is complemented by local cuisine and Tex-Mex food, music and country dancing. These events show Scandriglia both as a place of religious traditions and as a setting for community festivals featuring culinary and musical elements.

Archaeological traces

The archaeological excavations in the village of Madonna dei colori include the remains of ancient Roman villas, including the Villa dei Brutti Praesentes. Together with the monasteries, churches and network of trails, they create a broad range of options for planning your trip: you can treat landscape destinations, sacred architecture, archaeological history and seasonal events as separate focal points without reducing Scandriglia to just one aspect.
