Settecamini offers a unique gateway to the history of the Via Tiburtina: at the Area Archeologica di Settecamini, ancient road architecture, tombs, and traces of a Roman suburb meet a local character that is also reflected in the cuisine and the annual community festival. The Area Archeologica di Settecamini on the Via Tiburtina

The Area Archeologica di Settecamini lies halfway between Rome and Tivoli, at the eighth mile of the Via Tiburtina. The connection between road and building is particularly vivid: at the Area Archeologica di Settecamini Grande Corte, it is possible to see how the ancient Via Tiburtina leads into a building with a large courtyard.

The archaeological site consists of two large excavation areas separated by an urbanized zone. In the western excavation area, the well-preserved paving of the ancient Via Tiburtina has survived. The remains of a road station dating from the 1st century BC are also located there. This section makes the historical importance of the transport route understandable through tangible structural remains.

The eastern archaeological area shows a cross-section of Rome’s suburbs during the Imperial period. Various tombs are visible along the road, and the remains of an inn are also part of this area. The area of the Area Archeologica di Settecamini was inhabited until the 5th century CE. This makes it possible to trace the site’s development not only through a single monument, but through several different traces.

Visitor Information and Historical Details

A maximum visitor capacity of 30 people is specified for the Area Archeologica di Settecamini. At the same time, the Area Archeologica di Settecamini is temporarily closed to the public because of the works planned as part of the PNRR. If you would like to include a visit firmly in your plans, you should take this status into account and check separately whether it will be open during your desired period.

Local traffic conditions may also be adjusted in connection with events. During a local event, bus route 041 toward Ponte Mammolo was diverted from Via Casal Bianco at the level of Via di Settecamini via Via Casal Bianco and Via Rubellia. On the modern road, at kilometer 14.700, there is also a milestone identifying the ninth mile marker and bearing the name Valentinian.

Local Character Between Country House and Festival

The culinary side of Settecamini includes Casale del Fornaccio in the Settecamini area. The fully restored old country house already served as a bakery in the Middle Ages. At Casale del Fornaccio, cooking is done in a wood-fired oven; doughs with a long rising time and a high, airy crust are prepared there.

The cuisine at Casale del Fornaccio prepares typical Campanian dishes as well as classic Roman dishes. This gives the archaeological focus a regional culinary dimension, in which two culinary traditions stand side by side. The Festa di Settecamini is also an annual festival of the local community and provides another established point of reference for the area.
