Zagarolo between a Medieval Centre and Sacred Art

Zagarolo’s historical character is particularly evident in its townscape and churches. The historic centre has medieval origins and features a regular street grid. Following the completion of construction work in 1623, the Collegiata di San Lorenzo acquired its present cruciform shape. An ancient weighing scale, with the units of measurement formerly used locally, can still be seen on Via Fabrini.

Churches with a Rich and Layered History

Among the religious sites is the Santuario di Santa Maria delle Grazie. It developed from an older Marian chapel and an ancient hermitage, which were converted into a church and monastery in the early years of the 13th century. The image of the Virgin venerated in the sanctuary was brought there around 1223 by Saint Francis. Architectural history and religious tradition therefore come together directly in this place.

Other churches also preserve works of art and historical connections. The Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata houses an 8th-century fresco of Saint Albina. The original Chiesa di San Pietro Apostolo was built in the 12th century on the site of a chapel dedicated to Saint Peter. Palazzo Rospigliosi houses the Sala della battaglia di Lepanto, a frescoed room on the piano nobile. The “Ricorda” route is an urban trekking walk through Zagarolo’s historic centre. It presents the history and former sites of silk production, including the ancient “Cacciasete” silk manufactory. The festival calendar also has a clear local focus. The traditional Processione in onore della Madonna della Divina Provvidenza passes through the streets of Zagarolo on the second Saturday in September.
