Toirano between Prehistory and a Historic Townscape

Toirano is interesting for travellers who want to discover history across different layers of time. The Bàsura Cave preserves hundreds of human footprints, handprints and knee prints, as well as finger marks and charcoal traces from the late Epigravettian period, dating back around 14,400 years. At the same time, the historic settlement of Toirano contains traces of walls, towers, medieval houses and loggias. Two of the five former entrance gates have survived. This means that Toirano offers a view ranging from the very early history of humankind to the architectural evidence of the medieval townscape.

Churches, Bell Tower and Museum

The Chiesa della Madonna del Rosario is located in Toirano's historic centre. It houses a processional statue of the Madonna del Rosario dating from the 17th century. The bell tower of the Chiesa parrocchiale di San Martino in Toirano dates from the 14th century. The Museo Etnografico della Val Varatella, established in the stables of the 16th-century Palazzo D'Aste, offers an insight into local everyday and cultural history.

Religious Architecture in the Town and on Monte Varatella

The Parrocchiale di San Martino Vescovo di Tours acquired its present building through a complete reconstruction at the end of the 16th century. It is a Baroque building with three naves. The Ex Monastero della Certosa in Toirano was built from 1495 onwards, after the Carthusian monks received permission to move the monastery's seat from Monte Varatella. The Abbazia di San Pietro nei Monti stands on the summit of Monte Varatella. It offers a magnificent panorama and was founded before the year 1000 by Benedictine monks.

Walks, Bridge and Religious Traditions

If you would like to explore Toirano on foot, you can walk along paths throughout the Toirano area. The Ponte delle Giaire connects the Borgo di Toirano with the hamlet of Canepari and is crowned by a small wayside shrine dedicated to the Madonna. Every five years, a traditional procession leads from the Borgo di Toirano to the summit of Monte Varatella. The combination of paths, buildings and religious customs makes it possible to discover the area in different ways without having to limit yourself to a single attraction.

Festivals with Culinary and Spiritual Character

The Festa dei Gunbi celebrates Toirano's local cultural and gastronomic heritage. During the festival, the historic centre comes alive with a tour featuring typical dishes, music, performances and folklore. The feast day on 13 December has a different focus: every year, a torchlight procession takes place at the Santuario rupestre di S. Lucia, organised by the Gruppo Speleologico Cycnus. For planning your trip, such firmly established dates can be just as important as the historic buildings if you want to combine Toirano with local culture and religious traditions.

Choosing Accommodation to Suit Your Plans

When choosing a hotel or other accommodation in Toirano, you can take your personal priorities into account. Those mainly interested in early human history can use the Bàsura Cave as their thematic focus. For cultural and historical days, the churches, museum, medieval traces and former monastery offer different themes. Walking routes, the Ponte delle Giaire and Monte Varatella, in turn, suit travel plans in which activity and landscape are as important as the town's history. If you specifically want to experience a festival, you should coordinate your accommodation planning with the relevant date and the character of the procession or the Festa dei Gunbi.
