Albino: Church Art, Museums and Paths in the Valle del Lujo
Albino combines historic churches, museums devoted to local and military history, and a mid-altitude path in the Valle del Lujo. If you would like to combine culture and landscape on a trip, here you will encounter sacred art, agricultural work and paths through landscapes that preserve traces of their former use. It is precisely this combination that makes Albino interesting for individual travel planning.
Churches with Art and Tradition
The Chiesa San Bartolomeo was built in the second half of the 15th century in the heart of Albino’s old historic center. It preserves fresco cycles depicting the martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew and the stories of Blessed Simon of Trent. The church also houses the wooden polyptych of Saint Bartholomew, a work by Pietro Bussolo and Giovanni Marinoni. The Chiesa della Madonna del Pianto is richly decorated with works by Guglielmo Lecchi and preserves valuable artworks by Moroni, Slmeggia and Zucco. The original Chiesa della Santissima Trinità was built in the 15th century. The Santuario della Beata Vergine del Monte Altino is associated with the tradition that the Virgin Mary appeared on this mountain in 1496.
Museums between Folk Culture and Contemporary History
The Museo Etnografico della Torre preserves and documents artifacts that express local work and folk culture, particularly peasant civilization. The Museo storico degli Alpini di Albino exhibits and catalogs more than 600 objects. It addresses the equipment of the Alpini and military life during the First World War from 1915 to 1918, the Second World War from 1940 to 1945, and the postwar period from 1948 onward. The Museo Etnografico Valle del Lujo specializes in the local chestnut culture as well as old apple and pear varieties. It also focuses on reconstructing the history and traditions of Casale and, more generally, the Valle del Lujo. Tools, materials, documents and everyday objects reveal the socioeconomic context of their production and use there.
Craftsmanship and Paths through the Valley
Maglio Calvi is an old forge that was founded more than 200 years ago and operated until 1972. It is used for temporary events and visits by prior reservation.
La Strada Verde is a mid-altitude path between culture and nature that runs through the Albino area in the Valle del Lujo and connects via Monte Altino with the municipality of Cene. The Strada Verde is connected to the Serio cycle and pedestrian path as well as to the existing cycle network in the Valle Seriana. Its route passes through forests, pastures and terraces that preserve traces of former agricultural work. This part of Albino is therefore suited to you if you would like to explore cultural history and landscape at a more leisurely travel pace.
