Costa Di Mezzate: History, Parks and Italian Village Life
Costa Di Mezzate combines historic buildings, green spaces and seasonal events to create a varied stay in Italy. Between the parish church of San Giorgio, old fortifications, parks and Cascina Fuì, you will encounter different sides of the town. Those who want to combine culture, local festivals and peaceful discoveries will find several specific points of interest here to help plan their trip.
Churches, Palaces and Fortified History
The parish church of San Giorgio was built in 1510 at the request of Count Martino Vertova and consecrated in 1528. Inside are two paintings by Enea Talpino, Il Salmeggia, as well as an altarpiece by Giacomo Trecourt.
Palazzo Gout is an aristocratic palace dating from the 18th century. It was built on the foundations of an earlier fortified palace known as “Pavione degli Zoppi” and “Casatorre degli Zoppi”. The main hall is entirely decorated with frescoes depicting architectural scenes, as well as statues, vases and floral motifs. Torre degli Zoppi also reflects the area’s fortified past: the ancient defensive structure was built by the noble Zoppi family from Bergamo.
Rasetto served as a place of reception and refuge for the local, predominantly farming population during attacks from outside. On Colle San Geminiano, an ancient tower remains, considered the best-preserved part of the former Castello, also known as “Castrum”, of the Counts Ghisalbertini De Martinengo.
Parks Among Hills, Remembrance and Family Time
Parco rinascita is located in a green area on Via Greppi at the foot of the hill in the northern part of the municipality. It makes the hilly area more accessible and usable for all residents. Native species define the park’s edges and enhance the local flora. Parco Tiraboschi Abate is a public park with a children’s playground and no changes in elevation, making it accessible to people with disabilities as well. The redevelopment of Parco della Rimembranza was completed in 1959. It included a new monument to all those who fell in the great wars.
Festivals, Market and Local Cuisine
The international street arts festival Magie al Borgo, held annually in Costa Di Mezzate, is a defining feature of the town’s events calendar. In Paese Vecchio, the traditional summer celebration opens Cascina Fuì to the public. During the summer, from Thursday to Sunday, the cascina becomes a place to enjoy meals together with friends and family. At the summer festivals, you can sample typical local dishes.
For more than twenty years, an antiques market has been held at Cascina Fuì on the first Sunday of every month, attracting exhibitors from all over Italy. The cascina is located near the border with Bagnatica, at the foot of Colle San Geminiano and Castello Camozzi Vertova. It can be reached on foot or by car from the historic center of Costa Di Mezzate; there is a large parking area around the cascina.
