Discover Mozzanica: History and Landscape along the Serio

Mozzanica between history and the Serio landscape

Mozzanica combines distinctive architectural heritage with a river landscape that can be explored directly along the Serio. At the center is the Torre Civica: it was built in 1492 at the behest of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, to control the territories of the Republic of Venice located on the far side of the Serio River. The tower thus points to the political importance that the river and the surrounding areas once held.

The Torre Civica is also precisely characterized by its appearance. It has a square ground plan, is made of exposed brick, stands 42 meters high and is topped by a Guelph merlon crown. In the 19th century, it was fitted with bells and a new clock, thereby also taking on the function of a bell tower. A single building thus reveals different phases in the development of the town's history.

Church, palace and museums in the surrounding area

Another historical landmark is the Chiesa di S. Stefano. The church dates from the 16th century and has a terracotta gabled façade. For those interested in culture, this creates a distinct focus alongside the Torre Civica: here, the emphasis is not on military and political history, but on religious architecture.

Several other cultural destinations can be found in the area around Mozzanica. Memoria della Comunità is located there as a museum, while Palazzo Rubini is a palace. Also in the surrounding area is the Museo d'Arte e Cultura Sacra, which adds a religious and art-related dimension as a museum. The Museo Civico Treviglio is likewise located in the area around Mozzanica as a museum. These different places offer various ways of engaging with local memory, architecture and culture.

The Serio riverbanks and cycling

At the level of Mozzanica, the bed of the Serio narrows. Small wet woodlands grow along the banks of the side channels. The landscape is therefore not merely an open river zone, but also a habitat with damp riverside areas shaped by side channels.

For cycling, the Casciana Colomberone route leads through Parco del Serio to the Santuario della Madonna della Neve in the hamlet of Colomberone. This route is recommended for cycling.

Mobility and accommodation planning

In Mozzanica, Autoguidovie's suburban MIOBUS is available as a public on-demand bus service. This information provides practical orientation on site and complements the overview of the sights and routes. If you are planning your trip individually, you can therefore take local mobility into account alongside the cultural and landscape-related aspects.

When choosing accommodation in Mozzanica, it is useful to identify your personal priorities: architecture and museums on the one hand, and the Serio landscape and a recommended cycling route on the other. You can therefore first decide which aspect of the town should shape your stay before selecting a hotel or other accommodation.
