Blevio: Mosaics, Cultural Heritage and Circular Hiking Trail
Historical Traces in Blevio
Blevio combines historic routes, protected cultural heritage and artistic initiatives in public spaces. The statutes of Como from 1335 assign Blevio, as a municipality, responsibility for maintaining a section of the Via Regina. This connection anchors the town in a documented history of transport, which can be kept in mind as important cultural context when exploring its routes.
The Prestinari organ of Blevio is also part of the town’s cultural identity. It dates from 1821, is a national monument and is protected as artistic and cultural heritage. Thus, in Blevio, a tangible 19th-century testimony stands alongside the historic connections that already linked the town with the Via Regina in the Middle Ages.
Mosaics as an Initiative in the Local Area
The “Parco mosaici di Blevio” project plans to create, over time, artistic paths along the footpaths and in the public parks of the municipality of Blevio. The project nature remains essential: it concerns a development intended to proceed step by step, not a blanket statement about facilities that have already been completed.
The mosaic technique chosen for the Parco Mosaici di Blevio makes it possible to create outdoor artworks that can withstand exposure to the elements. In this way, the initiative combines the design of public paths and parks with a technique expressly intended for outdoor use.
A Circular Route between Paths, a Church and Caves
“Tra i mosaici in riva al Lario” is a circular hiking trail between Sopravilla and Mezzovico in Blevio. Along this circular route, a 200 m out-and-back walk to the lakeside Church of Saints Epimaco and Gordiano is recommended. In Sopravilla, the circular route follows a paved footpath that coincides with the historic Strada Regia.
Two small rock chambers are also among the route’s distinctive features: the Grotta dei miti is a small grotto decorated with several low reliefs depicting epic stories. The Grotta dei putti is a small cave whose name refers to the statuettes located inside it.
Erratic Boulders along the Route
The circular route’s landscape experiences are complemented by distinctive erratic boulders. Prea Nairöla is an erratic boulder recognized as a natural monument. Sasso del Lupo is also an erratic boulder; the route reaches it after passing Monti di Sorto and Monti di Mezzovico.
Church Music and Local Cuisine
The ancient lakeside Church of Saints Gordiano and Epimaco has been associated with a series of organ concerts since 1990. Complementing this, Ristorante Momi in Blevio continues the local character of the area: chef Andrea Dotti draws on products and the local traditions of the lake for his dishes.
