Cantù Between Sacred Buildings and a Deep-Rooted Local History

Cantù combines a multifaceted architectural and cultural history with themes that can be brought together in a variety of day plans. The monumental complex of Galliano is located in the locality of the same name in Cantù, in an area of morainic hills. The complex includes the Basilica di San Vincenzo a Galliano, which was consecrated on 2 July 1007 and dedicated to Saint Vincent. This places a clearly dated sacred building and a characteristic landscape at the heart of Cantù’s local cultural history.

From Galliano to San Paolo

Other sacred buildings lead through different historical periods. The Basilica di San Paolo was built at the end of the 11th century. The lower part of its bell tower dates back to a stone tower belonging to Pietrasanta Castle. The Cappella della Madonnina contains archaeological remains from the first centuries of Christianity. The chapel also contains frescoes by Ambrogio da Vigevano and Cristoforo Motti dating from 1514. The Santuario della Madonna dei Miracoli was consecrated on 11 May 1555 and is linked to a miracle story handed down from the mid-16th century, associated with the image of Santa Maria Bella.

Plan Visiting Hours Precisely

The Basilica di San Vincenzo a Galliano currently has public visiting hours. From Thursday to Friday, it is open from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; and on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. From November to February, the hours are 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays, and 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sundays. This seasonal shift is just as relevant to daily planning as the specified days of the week.

Lace Art as Part of Cantù’s Culture

Alongside its sacred buildings, lace art is one of Cantù’s defining cultural themes. It developed significantly in the manufactories of the late 18th century and the century that followed. Lacework provided employment for entire generations of women and supplemented family income. The present-day cultural life also encompasses music: the International Piano and Orchestra Competition “Città di Cantù” is organized annually by the Nuova Scuola di Musica. Parco Argenti on San Paolo Hill

The public Parco Argenti is located on the slopes of San Paolo Hill in Cantù. From 1 November to 31 May, the park is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; from 1 June to 31 October, it is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. The two periods make the park a clearly plannable part of the day, while Cantù’s sacred buildings and cultural history provide other focal points.
