Castiglione Dʼintelvi between two lakes

Castiglione Dʼintelvi lies between Lake Como near Argegno and Lake Lugano near Osteno. This creates several specific points of interest for an Italian trip combining culture and landscapes. The location is less a single landscape impression than an interplay of two lake areas and the surrounding mountainous terrain.

Art, architecture and local history

Inside the Chiesa di Santo Stefano are statues, paintings, frescoes and stucco work by masters from the Intelvi Valley, including Ercole Ferrata, Carlo Innocenzo Carloni and Giulio Quaglio. Casa Rinaldi is a private building of medieval origin dating from the 13th century, also known as Casa del Bravo and Casa del Capitano.

The sacred furnishings of Santo Stefano thus stand in contrast to a different visual world at Casa Rinaldi, whose frescoes combine courtly themes, castle life and hunting. The Camera Picta of Casa Rinaldi preserves a fresco cycle with courtly themes. These include scenes from castle life and hunting depictions; the cycle is dated to around the middle of the 15th century. At the edge of the settlement stands the Oratorio della Madonna del Restello, accessible via a descending stone staircase. The building has an octagonal ground plan and was constructed between 1717 and 1726. The descending stone staircase at the entrance is therefore a specific feature of its location on the edge of the settlement.

The Teatro di Castiglione was built in the second half of the 19th century and hosted many performances with vocal musical accompaniment. The Mostra Giochi e Giocattoli di Gianni Marangoni occupies two floors dedicated to toys from the 1930s to the 1960s. The cultural spectrum therefore extends from sacred art and frescoes to theatre and toys. The Teatro also introduces a historical layer of the town that contrasts with the older Casa Rinaldi and the Oratorio from the 18th century.

Circular trail and surrounding mountains

For a landscape perspective, the circular trail Il grande anello della Valle d'Intelvi leads to several viewpoints. From there, the view extends across Alpine and pre-Alpine ranges as well as the central part of Lake Como. Alongside interiors and architectural forms, Castiglione Dʼintelvi can thus also be experienced through viewpoints and sweeping landscapes.

The surroundings of Castiglione Dʼintelvi include Monte Generoso, the summit of Monte Bisbino, Monte Brè and Monte Boglia. These four mountains and peaks add several distinct destinations in the immediate vicinity to the town’s connection with the landscape.
