Orsenigo: Villas, Cultural Heritage and Brughiera

Historical traces around San Biagio and Villa del Soldo

Orsenigo combines historic architectural landmarks with a musical tradition and a natural area shaped by heather and woodland paths. The town’s history extends from San Biagio and the rural estate of Villa del Soldo to the restored Lavatoio di Parzano, Villa Minoli-Marelli and the commemorative plaque for Simone da Orsenigo.

The church of San Biagio already existed in the second half of the 13th century. The present-day church was built in 1938 partly on the foundations of the older church. The sacred building therefore represents an architectural history spanning several centuries in the same location.

The first historical records of Villa del Soldo come from the Teresian Cadastre. At that time, the complex was a rural estate belonging to the nuns of San Leonardo in Como and was used for agriculture. The garden of Villa del Soldo covers 100,000 m²; numerous paths connect the buildings there. The limonaia of Villa del Soldo is now used for conferences and concerts. Its current use therefore differs from the complex’s former agricultural use.

Lavatoio di Parzano: restored heritage and local meeting place

The Lavatoio di Parzano was restored in 2002. During the work, the original brick and stone elements were uncovered again, while the surrounding green area was redesigned. The restoration thus preserves the building’s original materials while also incorporating its surroundings.

During the warm season, the Lavatoio remains a social meeting place. Local residents gather there to chat and relax in the shade. This use remains expressly limited to the warm season.

Villas, music and remembrance

The two parts of Villa Minoli-Marelli are connected by a characteristic wrought-iron footbridge. The footbridge is therefore a distinctive detail of the villa.

Musica in Villa is a traditional music and cultural series. It also includes an event at Villa Minoli-Marelli in Orsenigo. The villa’s architectural feature thus stands alongside its role within this series.

The commemorative plaque for Simone da Orsenigo remembers him as the first general engineer of the works on Milan Cathedral. This memorial links a figure from Orsenigo’s history with a major construction project in Milan.

Brughiera as a natural area

La Brughiera is a green heathland. The purple-flowering heather found there in particular gave La Brughiera its name. The vegetation is therefore directly reflected in the name of this natural area.

Several paths run through a woodland area in Brughiera. Squirrels and other wild animals, such as hedgehogs, dormice and stone martens, live there. In addition to the heathland, the woodland area therefore also characterizes the natural area described here.

Getting around the town

Bus route C45 Como–Inverigo–Cantù connects Orsenigo with Como and Cantù. It stops at Sospirata in the area of the Briantea state road and at the intersection of Via per Erba and Provincial Road 38 near the town hall.
