Ossuccio: Sacro Monte, Churches and Historic Sites

Ossuccio focuses on sacred art, Romanesque architectural history and unusual architecture by the water. The Antiquarium is housed in the former Hospitalis de Stabio, a place of refuge for poor people and pilgrims dating back at least to the 12th century. The Antiquarium’s archaeological collection traces the millennia-old development of Isola Comacina. Seasonal opening hours apply when planning your visit: from April to October, the Antiquarium is open from Thursday to Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Romanesque Churches and Medieval Traces

The Chiesa di San Giacomo a Spurano is a Romanesque church probably dating from the 11th century. Santa Maria Maddalena is also a Romanesque oratory from the 11th to 12th century. The building was mentioned in 1169 under the name “S. Maria Maddalena et hospitale”. Both sites therefore point to sacred architecture whose historical classification dates back to the Middle Ages.

Several specific traces of the furnishings have been preserved in the Chiesa dei Santi Agata e Sisinnio. The church retains its original altar as well as remnants of frescoes. Some of these frescoes are visible, while others are concealed in the attic. This gives visitors interested in culture a nuanced picture: alongside familiar architectural forms, preserved details and components that are not immediately visible also form part of the site’s history.

La Velarca and Orientation Along the Greenway

La Velarca in Ossuccio is a houseboat designed by Studio BBPR in 1959. From the lake, La Velarca can be reached by water taxi or on foot via the Greenway. Along the Greenway del Lago di Como, there are public car parks, bus stops and stops for boat services on Lake Como.
