Peglio between Village Structure and Mountain Landscape
The historic village of Peglio lies at the exit of the Piana di Livo in the Valle del Liro, above Gravedona and below the slopes of Sasso Pelo. Its location combines an established settlement structure with the transition to an area characterised by mountain slopes and peaks.
The inhabited village still preserves a dense structure of contrade and stone houses. Those interested in historic townscapes will find a clearly recognisable interplay of small-scale layout and traditional building fabric here.
Church Art in Peglio
The parish church of Sant’Eusebio e Vittore was rebuilt between 1607 and 1613. The presbytery contains frescoes and stucco work from 1614, including large depictions of the Last Judgement. The building thus combines an architectural history dating from the early 17th century with furnishings from 1614.
In the hamlet of Argesio, an exterior fresco of the Madonna between Saint Charles Borromeo and Saint Catherine can be found on a house. According to documents from the 19th century, it was signed by Fiammenghino in 1619.
As part of the Chiese Aperte programme, S. Eusebio in Peglio is open until 14 September 2026 on Saturdays and Sundays from 15:00 to 17:30. The time slot covers two and a half hours on both days and falls entirely in the afternoon.
Hiking Trails and Peaks in the Surrounding Area
Route 4 of the Via dei Monti Lariani is approximately 50 kilometres long and divided into two stages. The stage from Peglio to Sorico is approximately 26 kilometres long, takes about 8 hours and 30 minutes, and has 626 metres of elevation gain. The different details help you distinguish between the two route sections when planning your own itinerary. For the stage to Sorico, the approximately 26 kilometres, the approximate walking time of 8 hours and 30 minutes, and 626 metres of elevation gain provide a concrete framework for planning the day. Distance, duration and ascent must be considered together for this stage.
On the road from Peglio towards Livo stands the 17th-century Oratory of Madonna di Gorghiglio. A hiking route also leads from Bodone via Alpe Paregna onwards towards Monte Duria.
The peaks of Monte l'Usciolo, Monte La Nava, Punta Rasella and Sasso Canale are located in the immediate surroundings of Peglio.
Cultural Destinations in the Wider Regional Area
The Castello Sasso Corbaro castle, the Museo Moto Guzzi museum, the Bellinzona monastery and the Abbazia di San Pietro in Vallate church are located in the wider regional area around Peglio. The four destinations represent different forms of culture and history: castle, museum, monastery and church.
