Stazzona: Rural Paths, Chapels and Views of Lake Como
Stazzona is located in the Valle dell’Albano and overlooks Lake Como. Deciduous forests cover almost 70% of the municipality’s area. In the upper parts of the Valle dell’Albano, an area has also been designated as being of particular natural and faunal value. Nature enthusiasts can include both the wooded areas of the municipality and the upper parts of the Valle dell’Albano in their plans when visiting Stazzona.
Chapels, Church and Rural Village Character
The Tre Cappelle di Sariva are divided into three sections. Behind the complex is a U-shaped covered gallery whose picturesque decoration was commissioned to Giovanni Tagliaferri. Compared with Stazzona’s other votive chapels, the complex is unusually large. The parish church of San Giuliano in Stazzona contains a pair of polychrome, gilded wooden angels dating from the second half of the 16th century. Both examples combine religious buildings with artistic, handcrafted and historical details. The Tre Cappelle thus represent a structured complex with a gallery, while San Giuliano is notable for its sacred wooden furnishings.
Stazzona has a long rural tradition; its agricultural character can still be seen in the paths between the houses in its hamlets. The village also retains characteristic rural buildings with rye-straw roofs. In Stazzona, paths run between the houses in the hamlets; preserved rural buildings with rye-straw roofs are also part of the village character.
Hike with Views across Several Valleys
The hike “Passeggiata per i borghi intorno a Stazzona” passes the Tre Cappelle di Sariva, a religious building commissioned in the 19th century by the Cetta brothers, who came from Stazzona and emigrated to London. At La Costa, the hike reaches its highest point at an altitude of 980 metres. From there, it offers views of the lower Valtellina, the mountains of Alto Lario and the Valle del Liro. Anyone planning the hike should treat La Costa as a separate section of the route, as this is where the highest point, at 980 metres, is located.
Destinations in the Wider Regional Area
The peaks of Costone del Bregagno, Monte l'Usciolo, Monte La Nava and Monte Pizzone are located in the wider regional area around Stazzona. This wider area also includes Castello Sasso Corbaro castle, the Museo Moto Guzzi museum, the Bellinzona monastery and the Collezione Giancarlo e Danna Olgiati museum. In addition to the peaks, the wider area includes a castle, two museums and a monastery.
