Vernate between Roman Order and Landscape

Vernate combines traces of history with a distinctive landscape. The main settlement lies on a decumanus of the ancient Roman centuriation. The Roggia Ticinello also flows through Vernate and is considered a characteristic landscape feature. These two particular features alone show that cultural history and nature stand closely side by side here, without the town being limited to just one theme.

Castles and Churches with a History of Their Own

Castello di Coazzano is located in Coazzano, a hamlet of the municipality of Vernate. The medieval building was designed as a defensive structure. Its origins date back to the 14th century; at that time, it was considered a rural castle for defending the surrounding area. For visitors interested in cultural history, this creates a link from the Roman land division system to a later fortified complex.

The Chiesa del Mulino Vecchio was built in the 16th century to protect a miraculous image. After a long and careful restoration, it has been repaired and rendered in vivid colours. The bell tower is 11 metres high and has one bell. The Chiesa di Sant'Eufemia in Vernate has origins dating back to the 11th century. From 1605 to 1637 it was a chapel; in 1637 it was declared a parish church.

Work on the parish church that still exists today, dedicated to Saint Mary of the Assumption, took place between 1569 and 1597. Together with the older origins of Sant'Eufemia and Coazzano's medieval history, this creates a rich picture of different eras.

Wetland and Regional Excursion Destinations

The Zona Umida di Pasturago is located within the municipality of Vernate. The wetland covers approximately 4 hectares and is visited by numerous waterbirds. These include the kingfisher as well as usignolo di fiume, cannaiola, cannareccione and canapino. The gufo comune is considered a species that overwinters there. The Zona Umida di Pasturago complements the churches and historic complexes with a wetland inhabited by waterbirds.
