Discover Casorate Primo: Landscapes, Churches and Local Festivals
Rural surroundings, a rich local history
Casorate Primo reveals its character where the built-up centre and open countryside meet directly. The built-up centre of Casorate Primo is surrounded by fields, rice paddies and tall-stemmed woodlands. The old cascine around Casorate Primo are considered visible signs of the rural world that shaped the town. A walk through the poplar groves bordering Casorate Primo reveals traces and memories of the local history and culture.
Churches with different historical connections
Santa Maria del Carmine stands in Piazza Mira, an old church that presumably dates back to the 14th century. The Chiesa Prepositurale di San Vittore, known as the Duomo di Casorate, is the main church of Casorate Primo. The Cappella del Lazzaretto is a votive chapel built later on the edge of the former plague isolation site of Casorate Primo. Those interested in local history will find here a presumed medieval origin, the town’s main church and a chapel with a historical connection to a former isolation site.
The feather factory and its unusual products
Another historical trace leads to the feather factory of Casorate Primo on Via Anselmo dell'Orto. It was founded around 1955 by Pietro Belloni. The factory processed feathers for decorating the hats of wealthy women, for stage costumes worn by the dancers of the Moulin Rouge in Paris and by actresses, and for the parade hats of the Carabinieri and members of the town band. Here, themes such as craftsmanship, fashion and public appearances come together in a very concrete way.
Festivals on a fixed calendar
Sant'Antonio Abate is celebrated in Casorate Primo every year on 17 January. The traditional Festa di Sant'Antonio includes a procession with pets and farm animals, tractors, and draft and riding horses. The Podistica, held on the Sunday before the Sant'Antonio festival, includes four running routes of different lengths. If you enjoy local festivals and running events, this calendar combines a fixed date with a sporting occasion on the preceding Sunday.
Activities between sport and history
Clubs also offer a range of activities in Casorate Primo. The Associazione Arcieri dell'Est Ticino offers archery courses at the municipal sports centre of Casorate Primo. It also takes part in historical reenactments in medieval costumes and organises events. ASD Avventura Team Ticino, at Via Don Colzani 4 in Casorate Primo, runs a national survival school and outdoor activities. The locally connected range of themes thus extends from archery and historical re-enactments to outdoor activities.
A glimpse into everyday life in the town
The SognaLibro municipal library is also part of the local landscape. Through the Fondazione per Leggere, it offers the lending of books and multimedia media, including DVDs and CDs. Alongside churches, festivals and historic trades, media lending is therefore another concrete aspect of Casorate Primo.
