Casteggio: History Between Hills and Vineyards

History and Notable Buildings

Pistornile is the oldest part of Casteggio and lies on a hill and its slopes. It preserves the cultural traditions of Casteggio, which focus on the activities of the Certosa Cantù. The Chiesa di San Sebastiano was built in 1570, was originally dedicated to the SS. Trinità, and received the patronage of San Sebastiano in 1590. Its façade was altered in the Baroque style in 1767. Inside, the church preserves a wooden choir dating from 1700, as well as an 18th-century painting attributed to Bibbiena.

The Monumento della Vittoria Alata is an 18.5-metre-high bronze monument to those who fell in the First World War. It was created by the sculptor Pier Enrico Astorri and inaugurated on 21 November 1926 by Umberto di Savoia, the then Prince of Piedmont.

Several villas also bear witness to the town’s architectural and social past. In the hamlet of Mairano, Villa Marina stands on Via Castel del Lupo and is the most prominent 19th-century building in the area; Giuseppe Mazzini also lived there. Villa Pegazzera is located on a hill spur along the provincial road to Calvignano. It was built as a summer boarding school at the request of the Collegio Borromeo di Pavia and, in its original form, dates back to the early 18th century. Villa Frecciarossa stands on a promontory above Praielle road and was designed for the Marchesi Botta Adorno in the Neoclassical style at the end of the 19th century.

Casa Marangoni is associated with Albert Einstein’s stay in Casteggio from 1896 to 1899, when he was a guest of Giulio Marangoni, a native of Casteggio. The Palazzo Mezzabarba retains its original structure only on the side facing Via Baratta. Casa Arbasino is now the commonly used name for the remodeled remains of a rural building complex built by the Conventual Fathers of S. Paolo. According to tradition, Hannibal had his elephants watered at the Fontana d'Annibale, which still exists today, before crossing the walls of ancient Clastidium; the Fontana d'Annibale is now located on the outskirts of Casteggio.

Museums and Special Collections

The Palazzo Certosa Cantù houses the Civico Museo Archeologico and the Biblioteca Civica, with a reading room and multimedia area. The MAC – Civico Museo Archeologico di Casteggio e dell’Oltrepò Pavese was founded in 1974 to become a reference point for the archaeological culture of the Oltrepò area. It displays grave goods from numerous tombs discovered in the Oltrepò Pavese and pays particular attention to the necropolis of Casteggio in the Area Pleba section.

Another cultural highlight is the Casa dell'Art Brut. It preserves, documents, researches and presents its extensive collection of Art Brut and Outsider Art. In Casteggio, archaeological evidence, local memory and an independent art collection thus stand side by side, without the individual sites losing their distinctive focus.
