The church consists of a single central main space with an irregular octagonal floor plan, two side chapels, and a rectangular presbytery and choir. Toward the end of the 14th century, the Chiesa di San Genesio Martire is documented as a pieve, to which the faithful from the surrounding areas would gather. Architecture and medieval associations are found directly within the same building, without the interior's clear formal language being lost.

The Porta Pescarina is regarded in San Genesio ed Uniti as an element of particular historical and symbolic significance. It was an entrance gate to the Visconti Park.
