San Paolo between forest paths, cycling routes and Romanesque history

From the Valle Adivestra to the village

The Anello di Rocca Susella is considered a fairly easy walk through the forests of the Valle Adivestra. After descending from the Passo Crocetta, the circular trail reaches San Paolo. Along the way, it passes the Oratorio di San Rocco. In San Paolo, the path runs between the village houses to a small chapel. The sequence from the forest through the village and on to the chapel is part of the same walk and can be taken into account when planning the day as a succession of different trail sections.

SP 20 and the panoramic section

The SP No. 20 Val Schizzola–Gaminara–San Paolo is designated as a route of particular landscape and ecological importance. A section of this road between Colombara and San Paolo offers particularly scenic views. This special panoramic location lies between the two villages and not generally at every point along the route.

Cycling route with distance and elevation gain

The Rocca Susella da Retorbido cycling route passes through San Paolo while descending from the Borgo della Rocca and offers views of the area’s typical landscape. It is less than 20 kilometres long. Between Godiasco and Fortunago, it climbs more than 500 metres in elevation. Those planning this route for a cycling tour should therefore consider not only the total distance but also the climb on this section. Distance and gradient are separate planning considerations within the same route.

Romanesque architectural history

The Pieve Romanica di San Zaccaria has a three-aisled interior with original Romanesque capitals. It was probably built by the Comacini masters in the first half of the 12th century. In 1820, the Oratorio di San Rocco was located within the boundaries of the parish of Santi Pietro e Paolo. The date 1820 refers to the oratorio, while the pieve is associated with the first half of the 12th century.

San Paolo as a waypoint on the Pieve route

The La Pieve di San Zaccaria route includes San Paolo as one of its waypoints. When planning this route individually, the village can therefore be considered a specific point along the route.
