Scaldasole between the Castle, Nature and Fields

Scaldasole combines a fortified castle complex with protected countryside, archaeological history and a cycling route through the fields. The Castello is set in a rural environment where the nature reserve, Cascina and fields represent distinct, tangible features.

The Castello di Scaldasole and its history

The Castello di Scaldasole is a fortified complex with seven medieval towers and a 15th-century Ricetto, described as unique in the Lomellina. The original core of the Castello di Scaldasole was built at the end of the 10th century. In 1404, Ardengo Folperti had the Ricetto built as an arms depot and refuge for the population. More than four centuries lie between the end of the 10th century and 1404.

The Antonio Strada archaeological collection is also part of the region's cultural history. It includes artefacts dating from the Neolithic to the Lombard period, thus spanning a broad period of history. For those interested in culture, the historical scope here extends from medieval military architecture to artefacts from the Lombard period. Visits to the Castello di Scaldasole are available for groups and school classes by mandatory reservation and with a minimum of 15 people.

Nature Reserve and Rural Landscape

The Boschetto di Scaldasole Regional Nature Reserve was established in 1984. A second aspect of the landscape is the Cascina adjacent to the Castello di Scaldasole. It was built between the 18th century and the beginning of the 20th century according to the traditional model of a closed farmstead. The agricultural operation there produces rice, corn and poplars and raises cattle. The Cascina thus represents both traditional farmstead architecture and agricultural use.

Cycling Route and Fishing

The Il giro della Lomellina cycling route runs from the turnoff near Cascina Bonaparte across the fields to the Castello di Scaldasole. The turnoff near Cascina Bonaparte is the starting point; the Castello di Scaldasole is the endpoint of the section described. Fishing is permitted at Laghetto “Emilio” after registering with the responsible amateur sports club. Registration with the responsible amateur sports club is the required preparatory step for fishing.
