Siziano: Landscape, Architectural Heritage and Regional Flavors
Siziano combines a multifaceted cultural landscape with experiences in nature and a distinctive regional way of life. The Parco del Lambro Meridionale e del Ticinello is an intermunicipal landscape park covering approximately 616 hectares. It extends along the Lambro Meridionale and the Ticinello Canal through Siziano, Vidigulfo and Torrevecchia Pia. The approximately 616 hectares refer to the intermunicipal park as a whole, not solely to the landscape area in Siziano. For this reason, Siziano, Vidigulfo and Torrevecchia Pia must be considered as geographically separate areas.
Campomorto and Medieval History
A historical connection can be seen in Campomorto. The monastery of Campomorto was built in the 14th century by descendants at a site where a fortification had already stood. The Castello–Abbazia di Campomorto complex preserves the remains of a fortified medieval monastery. These include a preserved ravelin and two buildings positioned at right angles to each other. The combination of fortification history and monastic architecture gives this part of Siziano a clearly recognizable historical character.
Churches, Frescoes and Sacred Sites
The Chiesetta di Casatico, also known as the Oratorio di Casatico, is another point of cultural interest. It is a Renaissance-style church set in open countryside. The presbytery contains 15th-century frescoes attributed to the Lombard school of Luini. Architecture and art come together here without the rural character of the surroundings being lost.
Other religious and historical sites are scattered throughout Siziano and its districts. The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Bartolomeo has been connected with the dependencies of the Pieve di Decimo since the 13th century. Its basement houses the Museo storico dei combattenti. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta is located in Campomorto di Siziano, while Il Gesiolo is situated in Siziano’s Casatico district.
Interests for Families and Nature Lovers
Ortolandia – L’Orto dei Bambini adds a family-oriented aspect. The initiative for children promotes educational activities focusing on nature and vegetable growing. Together with the extensive landscape park, this creates a field of interest that views nature not only as a backdrop, but also as a subject for learning and observation.
Regional Flavors and Local Traditions
The cultural food and wine association “La sorgente del Gusto” promotes culinary events, tastings and gatherings focused on the region’s authentic flavors and culinary traditions. Another historical note is provided by the tradition according to which, in 1485, a young peasant woman is said to have encountered the Madonna in an apparition in the lands of Villamaggiore. The culinary events, tastings and gatherings stand alongside the sacred and historical themes of Siziano.
