Cadegliano-Viconago combines medieval civil architecture, historic churches and trails with views of Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains. Casa Andina in Cadegliano-Viconago is part of the medieval civil architecture of the 11th and 12th centuries. In the hamlet of Doneda are the remains of a 12th-century castle; the oldest surviving section is partially in ruins. Casa Andina and the castle remains in Doneda represent different forms of secular architectural history: civil architecture in one case, and the partially ruined remains of a castle in the other.

Churches and Historic Trails in Viconago
Viconago is known as the “Balcone sul Lago di Lugano” because of its location. The hamlet of Viconago is home to the Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate, the oldest building in the hamlet and a national monument. The current structure of the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta replaced an older building between 1672 and 1692. In the historic center, a mosaic Via Crucis created in 2004 also runs through the arcades and courtyards of the village. Sant’Antonio Abate and Santa Maria Assunta differ in age: the former is the oldest building in the hamlet, while the current structure of the latter was built between 1672 and 1692. The mosaic Via Crucis created in 2004 adds a more recent chronological reference in the historic center.
Views and Landscape along the Dovrana
The forecourt of the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista offers a good view of Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains. Another fixed point of reference is the area around the Dovrana stream, which became a public park in 1997.
Hiking on the Sentieri della Pace
Route 5 of the Sentieri della Pace forms an approximately 11-kilometer circular trail around Viconago. The Sentieri della Pace hike leads to trenches and military communication trenches, the trench at Bocche di Noogh, machine-gun positions on Alpe Foiora and Alpe Cognolo, and an observation post on Monte la Nave. The approximate route length of 11 kilometers provides a distance range for planning your own day; it does not establish an exact walking time or difficulty level. The historic points are located at several points along the route and range from trenches to an observation post.
Cycling and Walking Path in Parco dell’Argentera

A Historic Transport Route
In Roman times, Cadegliano-Viconago lay on the Via Mediolanum-Bilitio. This road connected Mediolanum, present-day Milan, via Varisium, present-day Varese, with Luganum, present-day Lugano. The historical place names along the road therefore correspond today to Milan, Varese and Lugano.
