Castell'Alfero: History, Gardens and Local Traditions

Castell'Alfero combines a multifaceted local history with garden culture, religious heritage, festival traditions and Piedmont-inspired culinary experiences. This gives you a varied selection of impressions: the castle and museum, the rose garden and hilly landscape, as well as events throughout the year, offer different ways to discover the area.

The Castle and Cultural Heritage

The oldest structure from which today's Castello dei Conti Amico developed was built by the free municipality of Asti from 1290 onward. In the early 18th century, with the involvement of the Amico family and Benedetto Alfieri, the castle was transformed from a military building into an elegant Baroque residence.

The Museo 'L Ciär is located in partially restored underground rooms of the Castello dei Conti Amico and opened on September 1, 2002. The rooms of the castle were opened for events and used for exhibitions, piano concerts and book presentations.

Giovan Battista De Rolandis was born in Castell'Alfero in 1774 and is considered the creator of the Italian tricolour. In the hamlet of Callianetto, the Ciabot 'd Gianduja is considered the birthplace of the Piedmontese character Gianduja, who emerged in 1808 from the imagination of puppeteers Giovan Battista Sales and Gioacchino Bellone.

Hills, Church and Rose Garden

The Church of Madonna della Neve is located 2 km from the centre of Castell'Alfero on the ridge of the hills to the right of the Versa River. In the Middle Ages, a branch route of the Via Francigena ran through this spot. The Cammino Romanico Castell’Alfero leads to the Romanesque Church of Madonna della Neve and to a nearby picnic area.

In the hamlet of Serra Perno, the Roseto della Sorpresa is one of Piedmont's historic gardens. The Roseto is a 19th-century country house with a garden and a small woodland area, extending over approximately 14,000 square metres on the hillside. Around 500 varieties of botanical and old roses grow there. The Roseto della Sorpresa thus combines garden culture with the hilly landscape of Piedmont.

Palio, Viviverde and Piedmontese Evenings

Through its Palio committee, Castell'Alfero takes part in the Palio di Asti. On the first Sunday in September, the event includes a parade with medieval-costumed participants, flag-waving performances and a horse race contested by riders without saddles. During the historical parade, the Comitato Palio di Castell'Alfero presents a different theme each year, inspired by Asti's medieval history.

The Viviverde event traditionally takes place in Castell'Alfero on April 25. In cooperation with the local Pro Loco associations, food and wine evenings are held in June and July. These events focus on different aspects, ranging from historical pageantry and seasonal celebrations to regional cuisine.

Castell'Alfero can be reached by private vehicle and is located 10 km from the Asti-Est motorway tollbooth in the direction of Casale Monferrato.
