Castagneto Po reveals two closely connected sides: the nature-rich landscape of the Bosco del Vaj and a remarkable succession of historic churches, villas, and trails. If you would like to combine nature experiences with cultural history, you will find various options here for an individually planned stay.

Forest and trails in the Bosco del Vaj

The Bosco del Vaj reserve is characterized by rare beech forests in the Collina Torinese at an altitude of less than 600 meters. It is one of the few areas in the Collina Torinese where tall beech trees still grow. Some of these trees reach around 20 meters in height and more than 50 centimeters in diameter. The Riserva naturale speciale del Bosco del Vaj nature reserve covers 71.50 hectares.

Access to the Bosco del Vaj nature reserve is free, but is restricted to the designated roads and trails. Signposts and maps are available for orientation; benches, drinking fountains, waste bins, picnic areas, and play areas are also provided. You can reach the beech tree in the Bosco del Vaj from the lower entrance to the reserve via a walk of approximately 800 meters.

Hikes between Castagneto Po and the reserve

Several trails open up the landscape in different ways. The yellow trail in the Bosco del Vaj is called “Il tempo e la natura” and is 1.7 kilometers long. The Da Galleani alla Riserva del Bosco del Vaj hiking trail runs entirely within the municipality of Castagneto Po and reaches the Bric del Vaj at an altitude of 585 meters. The Cammino Romanico Castagneto Po–Riserva Bosco del Vaj circular trail takes around 120 minutes and reaches the entrance to the Bosco del Vaj reserve after approximately one kilometer.

The “Il Bosco del Vaj – tra matematica e natura” program is designed as a full-day circular hike starting and ending in the center of Castagneto Po. It follows an educational trail to the Bric del Vaj and is also suitable for family groups. Those looking for a longer route entirely through the hills will find the 15-kilometer Percorso S, which connects Castagneto Po and San Sebastiano Da Po and leads through their settlements and extensive forests.

Churches, spring, and Villa Ceriana

San Genesio is a Romanesque and Neo-Romanesque church founded and built by Fruttuaria Abbey between 1019 and 1150. The original building from the 11th to 12th centuries retains the central apse, a small northern apse with a crypt, and the imposing square masonry bell tower. San Genesio can be reached on foot from Chivasso in around 40 minutes.

The Regio Fonte spring is located near San Genesio. Its water contains salt, bromine, and sulfur; the spring is considered temporarily closed. Another landmark in the town’s history is the parish church of San Pietro Apostolo. It was built around the middle of the 19th century in the Neoclassical style and contains a painted vault, a large altarpiece, and a 19th-century organ.

The castle of Castagneto Po is called Villa Ceriana and has been documented since 1019; its reconstruction began in 1740 and was completed in 1835. Villa Ceriana has a 16th-century-style gallery decorated with carved marble and finely worked stone. Francesco Gonin and Costantino Sereno also designed several rooms.

Castagneto Po therefore offers different daily rhythms for planning your trip: short walks in the reserve, signposted trails around the Bric del Vaj, and cultural and historical destinations around the churches and Villa Ceriana. Depending on your priorities, you can give nature, physical activity, and architecture different emphasis.
