Cumiana: Natural Areas, Climbing Destinations and Piedmontese Culture

Cumiana offers a versatile setting for a stay in Piedmont: natural areas, outdoor activities and historic sites can be combined into a variety of daily itineraries. The following highlights will help you assess your travel plans and choose the location of your accommodation.

Natural Areas and Orientation

The Parco Montano dei Tre Denti e del Freidour was established as a regional park of provincial interest by Piedmont Regional Law No. 32 of 8 November 2004. It covers approximately 800 hectares and extends from an elevation of 640 metres to Monte Freidour at 1,445 metres. Mammals found here include wild boar, roe deer, chamois, Alpine hare, fox, badger, stone marten, weasel and squirrel.

The hiking trails in Cumiana are marked with white-and-red colour markings. In the area of Parco Tre Denti–Freidour, signposts on poles have also been in place since 2011.

History and Architecture

The bell tower of San Gervasio dates from the 9th century and is one of the oldest monuments in the Pinerolese area. Inside are the remains of a 15th-century fresco depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, attributed to the Master of Cercenasco.

East of the hamlet of Costa, remnants of the enclosing walls and several ruins of the Antico Castello della Costa have been preserved. They can be reached via a route of artistic and historical as well as scenic interest. The Palazzo della Costa began in the 16th century with a wing built by Guglielmo Bernardino dei Canalis and was expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Church of Santa Maria della Motta is dedicated to the Feast of the Nativity of Mary and has an elliptical floor plan. After Vicoforte, it is the largest oval church in Piedmont. Together, these buildings span a long historical period, from the 9th to the 19th century.

Climbing and Cycling

The Tre Denti di Cumiana feature particularly beautiful multi-pitch climbing routes. In addition, Boulder Garage is an indoor climbing centre in Cumiana with more than 300 m² of climbing space, a large bouldering area and an area for climbing circuits.

The green area between Cumiana town centre and Parco Tre Denti–Freidour is criss-crossed by MTB trails through beech and chestnut forests, past distinctive rock formations and along climbs of varying difficulty. The range of activities therefore extends from marked hiking trails and rock routes to mountain-bike tours.

Getting There and Choosing Your Accommodation

Cumiana is connected by regular bus services from Turin, Via Sacchi, running every half hour. Another option is the Turin–Pinerolo railway connection, getting off at Piscina and continuing to Cumiana by shuttle bus.
