Palazzo Canavese: Between the Moraine Hill, History and Regional Cuisine

Palazzo Canavese lies on a low hill opposite the Canavese plain and at the foot of the La Serra moraine hill. In the historic centre, the town preserves the typical atmosphere of the rural hamlets in this part of the Canavese. For geographical orientation, the hill opposite the plain and the foot of the La Serra moraine hill are distinct locations.

Architecture from Several Periods

At the Carcelle site, the visible ruins of a large wall structure have been preserved; it probably dates from the Late Roman Empire. Ca Bianca (La Cravaria) is a medieval fortified house, a palazzo and a civil residential building, as well as an architectural heritage asset of historical and cultural interest in Palazzo Canavese. The Torrione is the only surviving element of the former feudal castle of Palazzo Canavese. Since 1825, it has served as the Torre Campanaria, or bell tower. The Torrione connects the former castle complex with its function as a bell tower, which it has had since 1825.

Churches and Religious Architectural Heritage

The Chiesa di San Genesio dates from the 18th century. Part of the relics of Saint Genesio is kept in the church. Roman-period building materials were reused for the walls of the Chiesa di San Genesio. The cemetery chapel in Palazzo Canavese is dedicated to San Rocco and may have been built even before the cemetery. The reused Roman building materials concern the church walls, not its dating to the 18th century.

A Modern Addition to the Townscape

The Centro Comunitario was built by Eduardo Vittoria between 1952 and 1954. Palazzo Canavese therefore has, alongside Ca Bianca, the churches and the traces from Roman times, a building from the mid-20th century. The construction period from 1952 to 1954 came chronologically after the town's older religious and defensive buildings.

Routes, Cycle Paths and Bus Connection

The Via della Serra route meets the Via Francigena markers again on Via Asilo in Palazzo Canavese. There are 2.6 km of cycle paths running through Palazzo Canavese. The 2.6 km of cycle paths are a separate figure, while Via della Serra is connected to the Via Francigena via Via Asilo.

Palazzo Canavese is connected by bus route 96. This connection includes the Biella–Cerrione–Zimone–Piverone–Ivrea–Scarmagno route. The bus connection runs via Biella, Cerrione, Zimone, Piverone, Ivrea and Scarmagno.

Local Food and Rural Character

Pastificio Artigianale Il Castello welcomes visitors to the company's own shop in Palazzo Canavese. It offers fresh pasta as well as ready-made meals and gastronomic specialities prepared daily.

The Burrera is an old building that was used to store butter and other foodstuffs. The Burrera represents a former storage purpose, while the Pastificio offers food products for sale in its shop.
