A Place on Monte San Giorgio

Piossasco is shaped by Monte San Giorgio. The mountain reaches an elevation of 837 metres and dominates Piossasco. The Parco del Monte San Giorgio is crossed by 30 kilometres of trails, connecting the striking mountain with a landscape that you can explore on foot and by other means. The rare and protected peony (Paeonia officinalis) is the official symbol of the Parco del Monte San Giorgio. Nature, activity and a distinct local character therefore provide important starting points for planning your trip.

Trails for Different Activities

The Sentieri di Piossasco offer mountain, lowland and woodland trails for hiking, cycling or horseback riding. This variety of trail conditions allows you to adapt your chosen means of transport to your interests and preferred pace of travel, without reducing the destination to a single activity. The route to Monte San Giorgio reaches the summit via a relatively easy ascent on an unpaved trail. For cyclists, the Ciclostrada Piossasco-Pinerolo passes through the municipalities of the foothills. It partly follows municipal roads closed to traffic as well as minor roads through the landscape. When planning a day in Piossasco, the trail surface therefore matters alongside the means of transport. The unpaved ascent to the summit presents a different planning framework from the municipal roads, some of which are closed to traffic, and the minor roads of the Ciclostrada. The cycling route through the foothills passes through several municipalities, while the route to Monte San Giorgio leads towards a single mountain destination. The Sentieri complement this range of options with trails for horseback riding.

Historic Sites and Buildings

The history of the town is also reflected in several specific sites. The Church of the Santa Elisabetta Brotherhood consists of three adjoining chapels and contains sections of frescoes from the first half of the 15th century. The Chapel of San Giorgio already existed in 999. The Castello dei Nove Merli probably dates from the 14th or 15th century. These buildings, which date from widely separated periods, offer different perspectives on the development of Piossasco. The dates provide a direct chronological comparison: 999 predates the first half of the 15th century and the probable 14th- or 15th-century date of the Castello.

In addition, the remains of Piossasco's fortification walls are particularly well preserved along the via del Campetto. The Borgo di San Vito, also known as Piazza, developed as Piossasco's first town centre next to the Ricetto. For a stay in which natural trails and historic townscapes are equally important, these places offer tangible themes for your own explorations.
