San Giorgio Canavese between the Renaissance, Pilgrimage Tradition and Castles

Renaissance Art in the Chiesa Parrocchiale

The façade of the Chiesa Parrocchiale di S.Maria Assunta was considered, in its original form, one of the few examples of Renaissance churches in Piedmont. Its design was reminiscent, albeit only distantly, of San Sebastiano di Biella, the Santuario di Oropa and Turin Cathedral. The church is therefore part of an art-historical context that extends beyond the individual town without losing its own distinct character.

Inside the Chiesa Parrocchiale di S.Maria Assunta, a lunette painted in 1537 by Fermo Stella da Caravaggio has remained unchanged. The semicircular pictorial field is surrounded by eight apostles and the poetic words of the apostolic legend. Castello Biandrate and Historic Rooms

The Castello Biandrate di San Giorgio was built in the 12th century by the Biandrate family from the Province of Novara, who were in conflict with the Lombard League. The castle was extensively remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, it is an impressive residence with decorated rooms, old kitchens and an extensive English-style landscaped park. Its architectural history and later representative design are inseparably linked here.

Pilgrimage Tradition at the Santuario di Misobolo

The Santuario di Misobolo is located about three kilometres from the centre of San Giorgio Canavese and is a destination for pilgrimages and Sunday walks. The sanctuary has an old pilgrimage tradition that was later associated with the Easter Monday outing, Pasquetta, and had previously been linked to the Feast of Our Lady on 2 July. Sacred history and a recurring annual occasion shape this place in different ways.

The 52nd Storico Carnevale Sangiorgese in 2026 included parades, live music, dinners and the traditional serving of Fagioli Grassi.

Also in 2026, the tenth edition of the Mercato della Terra e della Biodiversità took place in the historic centre of San Giorgio Canavese and included tastings, discussions, games and workshops. The market thus brings together local produce, exchange and hands-on activities, complementing the historic sights with an insight into regional everyday life and food culture.

The area around San Giorgio Canavese is home to Castello Benso, Castello e Parco di Masino and Castello di Banchette. The Museo Della Carale Accattino, a museum, is also located nearby.
