Porto Palo Di Menfi: Coast, History and Sea
Accommodation in Porto Palo Di Menfi
Porto Palo Di Menfi is an old fishing village in the center of a wide bay. The white houses have preserved the old character of the fishing settlement. Together with the coast of light-colored, very fine sand, they create a townscape in which the maritime landscape and history are closely connected.
Coast, dunes and protected landscape
West of Porto Palo, the nature reserve at the mouth of the Belìce covers 129 hectares. There, dunes and typical wetland vegetation at the river mouth meet evergreen Mediterranean maquis inland. Also to the west lies the Solette coast: low clay hills slope gently down to the sea, forming sandy coves with individual rocks rising from the water. Submerged rocks and Mediterranean aquatic plants promote biodiversity there.
Barrier-free access is available to Porto Palo beach. This is an important point of reference if you wish to take the coast into account when choosing where to stay. The landscape combines fine sandy areas with varied coastal formations and protected natural areas.
Fishing village with a maritime past
The harbor of Porto Palo is used by both pleasure boats and fishing boats. Historically, Porto Palo was the ancient eastern landing place of nearby Selinunte. On the hilltop above the town stands the anti-corsair watchtower Torre anticorsara. It was built in 1583 to protect the town from attacks by corsairs and overlooks a panorama. A chapel dedicated to Madonna delle Grazie was built near the ancient watchtower around 1840.
The religious customs of this seafaring village include a procession that, during a festival featuring the small statue of Madonna delle Grazie and a marching band, travels along the main street to the Molo. From there, it continues by boat. The custom brings together the street, harbor and sea in an explicitly maritime festival procession.
A shipwreck as a window into antiquity
A Punic-Roman shipwreck lies near Porto Palo di Menfi. It belonged to a Roman merchant ship that sank between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC. Its dominant cargo consisted of Punic and Greco-Italic amphorae. In some vessels, remains of fish bones and vertebrae from small tuna survived in connection with garum. Recovered amphorae were deposited in the rooms of the Federico II Cultural Foundation of the Municipality of Menfi.
Cycle path and maritime events
The Menfi cycle path was created by converting the former Castelvetrano–Ribera railway line for environmentally sustainable tourism and runs through the maritime district of Portopalo. Its western section runs from the former Menfi railway station through Porto Palo to Vallone Gurra di Mare and is 7,943.95 meters long. All non-motorized means of transport, including bicycles and electric vehicles, are permitted on the cycle path.
Events also highlight the connection with the water. The “Barcolana di Porto Palo” takes place every year. The Inycon Sailing Cup in Porto Palo was the sixth edition. In addition, the fourth bio-snorkeling course organized by the Lega Navale Italiana took place in Porto Palo di Menfi. When choosing a hotel in Porto Palo Di Menfi, the coast, harbor, cycle path, nature and maritime history can form the focus of your personal travel planning.
Arriving by car
For journeys by car from Palermo, the route follows the A29 toward Mazara del Vallo, the Castelvetrano exit, the SS115 toward Sciacca and the Menfi (Porto Palo) exit. This makes it possible to include Porto Palo Di Menfi in your travel plans as a coastal destination with historical, landscape-related and maritime points of interest.
